Chapter Five: Truth

  

I see Maia fall from Mike's arms and I adjust my bow. Just as Mike began to charge towards me, I let go of the arrow and he turned to dust. Behind me, Isabella screamed.

"You idiot! How dare you kill him!" She lunged towards me fast and I didn't have time to duck. Luckily, Luke came up behind her and bit her hard.

"Aarargh!" Isabella screamed in pain.

I spin around to face her. "This is what you get for trying to kill me!" I drop my bow and strike her with my powers. She turned to dust.

Luke looked at me. "Dude, that was epic!"

I bowed. "I try to do my best." I say modestly.

Maia groaned.

Quickly, Luke and I run over to Maia.

"Maia, Maia! Are you okay?" Luke says, softly shaking her.

A wave of jealously hits me. How come he gets to touch her so casually? What? Why am I thinking like this? My thoughts are cut off when Maia sits up, rubbing her head.

"What happened?" she asks groggily.

"Well," Luke started, "we came back here to see your mum and Isabella and Mike appeared and they tried to kidnap you again. Mike had you on his back and you blacked out. Lachlan and I defeated both of them."

Maia is fully sitting up now.

"Wait a sec. You and Lachlan defeated them? I can understand you, Luke, but Lachlan?"

 

Luke and I glance at each other. I was the person that told him where Maia was. Luke had told me that he was a werewolf and, since werewolves and warlocks are allies, I told him Maia's real backstory.

Seeing the look between Luke and me, Maia crossed her arms. "You two are keeping secrets." By now, Maia is standing up. "If you don't tell me, I'll leave and go see my mum."

I bite my lip. Someone needed to tell her what's really going on.

"Maia," I say, "sit down."

My voice must have sounded more serious than I meant it to be, because Maia sat down straight away.

 

"Okay," I start off, "first of all, there will be no going to see your mum."

"Why?" Maia interrupts.

"If you listen, you'll find out." I say impatiently. "Anyway, your mum has been taken by the people who work for your father. As I'm sure you know, they are extremely dangerous, so don't go looking for her."

"Now," says Luke, taking over. "The life you've been living has been a complete lie. The world is not as it seems, and there are creatures other than humans. I'll start off by telling you each type of creature. There are fairies, vampires, mermaids, werewolves, and warlocks. I only found out about all of this a few days ago, so I might not explain it properly. Anyway, as you know, I am a werewolf. What you don't know is that your mum and your neighbours, Lachlan's family, are warlocks."

 

He gave her time to let it sink in.

"Wait. If my mum is a warlock, does that mean I'm one too?" Maia asks.

I bite my lip.

"Well, yes, but it's a bit complicated. You dad was a warlock when he married your mother but he wasn't when you were conceived. The thing is, shortly after his wedding, he was bitten by a vampire. He didn't know what to do, so he didn't tell anyone, he just went out once a week to feed. Your mum realised that there was something wrong with your dad, so she followed him one night and was shocked at what she saw."

"She ran home and didn't tell anyone for the next year. On the day of your first birthday, you father was having a particularly bad day and didn't have enough blood so he burnt down the house with your mum's parents and son in it."

I stopped speaking. Maia looked at me in disbelief.  

"You expect me to believe this crap?" She asked.

"Maia, it's not crap." Luke said. "It's all real. Why else would those people kidnap you and take you to your presumed dead father?"

"I don't know." She replied sulkily.

Then she lifted her head.

"Wait, did you say that my father burnt down our house with my mum's parents and son in it?"

"Yeah." I say.

"I have a brother!?" Maia screamed.

"I thought that you didn't believe us." I say, trying not to smirk.

"I might a little bit." She says grudgingly.

"Look. We can't stay out here. They will realise that Isabella and Mike are missing and they'll come looking for them."

"They? Who's they?" Maia says as Luke pulls her to her feet.

"The other vampires." I say as I close my eyes and chant a portal spell.

 

I can hear Maia ask what I'm doing and Luke telling me to hurry up. Finally, I finish.

"Hurry, I can smell them coming closer." Luke says.

I push Luke through the portal, then Maia.

"Hey you, stop!" A vampire screamed at me.

I jump though the portal and think about how Maia's going to be really pissed when she finds out how special she really is.
