Chapter Twenty Five: Diversion

We were about ten yards from the building. My nerves easing, my worrying lessening as we grew closer to the safe haven ahead. Peter was also confident that we would reach the building without trouble.

I had avoided the boys for the next hour, making sure to keep close to Peter or drift behind where I could hear a man and woman, Jack and Rachel talking about their families. I didn't want to be involved with the conflict that I now knew revolved around my attention. If that's what they wanted, then that's what they weren't going to get. I would ignore them at the very best of my ability.

"Stop!" Peter's frantic voice caught me off guard, my mind elsewhere "Stop moving! Stay quiet!" He screamed, his eyes wide, his face serious

I rushed to the front of the group, pushing past Jack and Rachel.

"What's going on?" I hushed, standing beside Peter who was squinting into the distance

"There" Peter spoke as he pointed

"Creatures?" Jaxon guessed as he also looked ahead

"No" I shook my head, catching sight of what had startled Peter, and with good reason

"Shaun's men" I corrected

"Had to run into them sooner or later" Peter sighed

In the distance, I could see two trucks and about five men. They were sauntering outside the building we had planned to camp inside from danger. How ironic.

"We can't go back" Jaxon mumbled

"They're blocking the way, we are going to have to take the exit"" Ronan joined

I rolled my eyes.

I stood up straight, rolling my shoulders back and forth "I'm going to get rid of them"
All eyes fell on me

"What's our plan?" Peter began

"Not our plan" I shook my head "My plan"

"Okay..." Peter drew out "What's your plan?"

"I'm going to draw them away from here, lead them elsewhere. You guys can keep going"

"Are you insane?" Ronan snapped as Jaxon opened his mouth to word something similar

"What part of it is insane?" I snapped back

"You can't lead them away on your own"

"I can, and I will" I told him "I've been doing this kind of thing alone for the past three years"

Ronan shook his head "No" He repeated a few times dramatically

"It's the only way everyone will get to the border safely" I told Peter simply "I'll meet you guys there later on" I shrugged, making it sound easy, simple

"It's a good idea" Jesse interrupted, pushing past Ronan and Jaxon in front of him

"You can't be serious?" Ronan snapped at him angrily

Jesse ignored him, looking towards Peter "I'll go with her"

Peter seemed to be considering it, no instant argument visible

Ronan groaned "I'm going too then"

"I can do this alone" I told Peter, uninterested in having company "A bigger group needs more power, they should stay here, get everyone to the camp safe" I argued

It was then Keira, Austin, Coby and the others came to the front of the group

"What's going on?" They asked, alert
