Twenty Five: Diversion

We were about ten yards from the building. I felt a small sense of relief that we were close, yet there was never any room to fully relax until we were completely in the clear. Peter was confident that we would reach the building without issue, but I knew better.

As we continued forwards, I managed to avoid the boys, keeping close to Peter or drifting behind them all where I listened to a man and woman at the back, Jack and Rachel talk about their families. I stayed quiet, I didn't want to cause any more arguments, I needed to keep a low profile, avoid conflict. I would ignore them all at the very best of my ability just to keep attention off of me.

"Stop!" Peter's frantic voice caught me off guard, my mind elsewhere "Stop moving! Stay quiet!" He called, his eyes wide, his face serious

I quietly rushed to the front of the group, pushing past the others

"What's going on?" I hushed, standing beside Peter who was squinting into the distance

"There" Peter spoke as he pointed

"Creatures?" Jaxon guessed as he also stared ahead

"No" I shook my head, catching sight of what had startled Peter - and with good reason

"Shaun's men" I corrected

"Had to run into them sooner or later" Peter sighed

In the distance, I could see two trucks and about five men. They were sauntering outside the building we had planned to camp inside

"We can't go back" Jaxon mumbled

"They're blocking the way forward, we are going to have to take the exit"" Ronan joined

I gave a muffled sigh, standing up straight, rolling my shoulders back and forth "I'm going to get rid of them" 

All eyes fell on me

"What's our plan?" Peter began

"Not our plan" I shook my head "My plan"

"Okay then" Peter grumbled "What's your plan?"

"I'm going to draw them away from here, lead them elsewhere, when I do, you guys can keep going"

"Are you insane?" Ronan snapped as Jaxon opened his mouth to speak something similar

"What part of it is insane?" I snapped back

"You can't lead them away on your own"

"I can" I told him confidently "I've been doing this kind of thing on my own for years"

Ronan shook his head "No, no, no" He repeated a few times dramatically

"It's the only way everyone will get to the border safely" I told Peter simply "I'll meet you guys there later on" I shrugged, making it sound easy, simple

"It'll work" Jesse interrupted, pushing past Ronan and Jaxon in front of him

"You can't be serious?" Ronan snapped at him angrily

Jesse ignored him, looking towards Peter "I'll go with her"

Peter seemed to be considering it, hesitating arguement as he thought about it

Ronan groaned "I'm going too then"

"I can do this on my own" I told Peter, uninterested in company "You need all the power you can get here, they should stay, just get everyone to the camp safe, I'll be fine" I argued

It was then Keira, Austin and Coby who came to the front of the group

"What's going on?" They asked, concerned
