Chris and Mike sat at the kitchen island counter, counting stacks of twenties and hundreds. Mike was running his money through a money counter and Chris was counting by hand.

Lani entered the kitchen from the garage. “Hey, baby,” Chris called out.

Lani pecked Chris on the cheek and said, “Hi, Mike.” She then made her way to the den.

“What’s wrong, babe?” Chris said, as he banded a pile of twenties together.

Mike piled a stack of twenties in the money counter. The loud-ass money counter was annoying the hell out of Chris because he was trying to hold a conversation. Mike placed another pile of twenties in the counter.

Chris said, “Bruh, can you chill out a minute? Let me talk to Lani.”

Mike said, “My bad.”

Chris turned back to Lani and said, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.”

Chris smiled and said, “Now, you know I know when something is wrong. What’s up?”

“How long is this bullshit going to go on between you and Black?”

“Who is Black?”

Mike laughed and said, “I knew somebody named Black, but he got murked.”

“Mike, you got jokes,” Lani said.

Chris stood from the table and said, “Oh, you defending that nigga? I mean this dude tried to kill me, and I’m supposed to just lay down? Really?”

“It’s not about laying down. It’s about having good sense.”

Chris said, “Let me tell you something. I’m not letting Black or nobody else do something to me and get away.”

Mike got restless and piled some more money into the counter and it began counting. When it stopped, he turned to Chris and said, “What happened to Black?” Then he laughed.

“This ain’t funny. This man is in the hospital holding on to his dear life, and it’s a goddamned joke to you.”

“Nothing is a joke. I’m not a goddamned joke. I told you a long time ago to tell his nana to tell him to leave me the fuck alone, or else he was going to pay for all those punk-ass threats.”

Lani left the room and headed upstairs. When she reached the bedroom, Chris was right behind her.

“Tell me the truth, Lani. What the fuck is up with you and Black? What is going on? I think there’s more to this bullshit than you told me.”

Lani was frustrated with him questioning her motives or her concern for Black. She just stared at him without answering the question. This was a question she’d answered so many times before.

Chris said, “Just as I thought. You love him.”

Lani picked up the remote control from the nightstand and pointed it at the plasma TV when Chris took hold of her wrist.

Lani shoved him and said, “Will you get the fuck away from me?” She stood and elbowed him. “Motherfucker, don’t ever put your goddamned hand on me!”

Chris pointed his finger in her face and said, “You’re one ungrateful-ass bitch, you know that?”

“Ungrateful? What are you talking about?”

“Do I have to tell you what ungrateful means?” He laughed and said, “Maybe I do since all you got is a GED.”

Lani said, “That was uncalled for”

“The truth hurts, huh.”

Lani said, “And the truth is, you went to college on a basketball scholarship, flunked out, and resorted to selling weed. And you like to say you was NBA material. Motherfucker, you averaged six points a game. Nigga, I googled yo’ ass.”

“At least I went to college.”

“And you ain’t no better than me, nigga.”

Lani took a deep breath. She sat back on the bed trying to calm herself down. She pointed the remote at the television again.

Chris yanked the remote out of her hand and threw it against the wall, shattering it into pieces.

Lani laughed, “You’re one immature-ass motherfucker.”

“What’s so funny?”

“You’re funny,” she continued to laugh and this infuriated Chris.

He said, “Why don’t you admit it? You love him?”

“I’ll admit you're an insecure motherfucker.”

“You know you love him.”

“I’ll always have love for him. I was with him for years, but you’re my man now. But I’m not going take you verbally abusing me because you gave me a few trinkets.”

“Trinkets?”

“You know what trinkets are, college boy!”

“I’m just tripping that you describe what I bought you as trinkets.”

“I’m just saying you might call me ungrateful, but I’m used to having shit. I’ve always had the best.”

“Courtesy of Black?”

“Courtesy of whoever. I’ve always had players, and I ain’t talking ‘bout no basketball players. Dudes with way more money than you’ll ever have.”

Mike burst into the room. “What the fuck is going on?”

Lani said, “You need to get your brother, Mike. I’ve had enough of his goddamned mouth.”

Chris stood in front of her. “What you gonna do to me, Lani?”

Lani laughed and said, “I can’t believe this punk-assed motherfucker is in my face like I’m a dude.”

Mike grabbed Chris by the shoulder and said, “What the fuck are you doing?”

Chris said, “You know I ain’t gonna hit her, bruh. She got too much mouth and she’s ungrateful as hell.

Mike yanked his brother by the arm and led him out of the room.
