Chapter Three: Favor of the Masses
The bell rung, later rather than sooner and everyone was up, eager to get to lunch. I, on the other hand, had different plans. I stay seated which doesn't go unnoticed by Cain. He's watching my posture and sees I haven't made an attempt to move. Cain leans back in his chair, crossing his arms. There's a group of girls waiting by the door at the top of the class. One seems brave enough to say, "Cain you coming to lunch?"
Out of my peripheral vision I see Cain nod, but he doesn't get up. The girls appear clueless as to what to do about this. Finally they decide to leave. Cain scoots towards me, getting inside my bubble. I suppress the urge to shove him away.
"What's the hold up, Rosie?" He asks and his breath fans along my cheek, that's how close he was. It was deliciously minty, but this guy has no boundaries what so ever.
"I need to talk to Mr. Williams," I reply as I climb out of my seat. Cain replicates my exact movement and I shoot him a glare. His lips quiver and I can see he's trying not to smile. The dimples in his cheeks deepen as he trys his hardest to hold back. He finds this enjoyable? I make a move to go around him, but he just stands there, blocking my way. I look around for Mr. Williams, but he was gone. He must've left to get lunch, awesome. Now I'd have to wait.
"Cain, move," I say as I try to side-step him. Cain looks deviously down at me. That's when I realize that was the first time I said his name. Fantastic. But he doesn't tease me about instead he looks rather perturbed.
"You wound me, Rosie, it's the first day and you won't even give me a chance?"
I was taken aback by his perceptiveness. Most guys would be oblivious and ask why I needed to talk to Mr. Williams. Cain out and put me on the spot. I was flabbergasted.
"I-I don't want my grade to suffer from your lack of commitment," Sugar. Honey. Ice. Tea. Did I just use commitment with Cain? Smooth one. Not. Cain raises an eyebrow.
"You have no faith in me, princess." He doesn't state it as a question, more like an observation. I sigh, bantering was fine, it's just when we teeter on the deeper stuff that makes me uncomfortable. His eyes darken as his jaw ticks. Wait, is he angry with me? This was a strange sight considering I didn't even know the guy.
I instantly wanted to reassure him. Curse you comforting instinct! I was about to do so, when he took another step forward, entering my space. I took one back and he matched me step for step until I was flush against the wall.
He was right there in front of me, towering over me, and surrounding me with himself. I sucked in a sharp breath, unsure of his actions. My heart was beating erratically when his lips were just outside my ear. His eyes were stormy, promising vengeance and I was worried for my safety. Although, I had a feeling he wasn't here to hurt me.
"Don't you worry about talking to Mr. Williams, Rosie, I'll do my best to not show up to this class," with that he pushed away from the wall and stormed out the room. I stood there in shock for a couple of seconds before walking back to my seat to calmly gather my belongings.
I think I just made the hottest guy at school hate me and I don't even know how. Nice going, Rose, way to make friends. I shook my head at this and begin to head back to the cafeteria. Maybe he had some underlying issues that make him temperamental. I mean, he's obviously been to juvie, so he probably has a short circuit. I just pray he won't be raking my name through the mud because then I'll really have no hopes of a social standing.
