Chapter Five: Good Luck and All That Jazz

"Rose Anders, see me after class," my head jerked up as Mr. Williams literally just called me out on the second day of school. Come on my luck is not really that bad. Mr. Williams gave me a pointed look and we went back to the lesson. Yes, we have a lesson today. It's been a streak of a terrible Thursday. Firstly, when I came downstairs I heard my mom arguing with my dad over the phone for some reason. She was going to call off the flight. Hell, she was threatening divorce. Which was so unlike her. She called him a variety of colorful names and told him she's still coming to New York so he could pay for a lawyer. Then she hung up and stalked off to her room without even speaking to Beth or me.

Secondly, a certain Cain Ryder didn't even show up to school. Like he was nonexistent. I guess he was just keeping his promise. Naturally, I felt guilty. Why would he seriously screw up his school because of some little spat (not really) that happened with a girl he didn't even know? Was he really that sensitive? I didn't think he would be. Maybe he was just ditching. Or he was purposefully trying to make me feel bad.

When the bell rings I slowly make my way up to the front of the room. I stood there as I waited for Mr. Williams to look up at me. "Rose I need you to do something for me, it's really not going to be the easiest of tasks. Would you be up to it?" He asked taking off his glasses. I raised an eyebrow. He didn't even tell me what I needed to do.

        "Uh, what's the task?"

Mr. Williams smiled, "smart girl. What I need you to do is to track down Cain Ryder and give him this note." Mr. Williams revealed a white envelope. What was inside that was so important?

"W-why me?" I asked, suddenly getting nervous. Cain didn't like me. Why did I have to even confront him?

"He'll tell you when he see's this," Mr. Williams says when placing it in my hands. I wanted to drop it on his desk.

"That's a little vague," I told him, still unsure if I should even accept this duty. I mean, I could just open it to see it for myself and if I didn't like what it said then I could just trash it. But I have a feeling Mr. Williams would figure it out. Mr. Williams chuckled as an answer and turned away. I pressed the issue a little further.

"Does he need this today? I mean he's not at school and I don't..."

Mr. Williams handed me a small sheet a paper. I had a bad feeling about this. "Here's his real number. Try not to give it out. He needs the note today, please." Mr. Williams didn't even look at me throughout the whole transaction.

"Isn't this illegal?" I questioned some more.

Mr. Williams sighed, "no, considering Cain is my nephew and this is imperative. Go to lunch now, Rose." He said looking at the door sliding a hint that I should leave. I was a little peeved at his bluntness, but I suppose irritating him would do that. I had one more question to impose on him.

"Wait, if he's your nephew, why can't you give him the note?"

Mr. Williams narrowed his eyes as he looked at me, "I have my reasons, Rose. Now please just give him the note." He was threw talking with me, I knew that.
