Just Another Day

Fey Blake woke to her alarm clock singing, "wake uppp, wakkke uppp, waaakkkkeee uuuupppp!"

She clicked the button on top and rolled onto her back. She stared up at the blank white ceiling.

Another day, she thought, another week.

It was monday. So of course, back to school.

With a sigh she got up and went to take a shower.

After her shower, as she brushed her thick dark hair, (it wasn't wet because she wore a shower cap) she thought about her latest dream. Well, nightmare was a better description. She'd been having them for weeks now. They weren't always the same, but one nightmare came almost every night.

The doorbell rang downstairs.

Her mother would already be at work, so Fey quickly through on her tee and jeans and ran to the door.

She and her mother lived in a small apartment in LA, with two bedrooms, a small bathroom, and a combined kitchen/living room. They had lived there for 4 years now, since Fey's father had died. Well, didn't come home was a better way to put it.

The door bell rang again impatiently.

She opened the door to find a man of about 40, with a barrel chest and walrus mustache. He wore the uniform of a UPS worker.

"Miss Fey Blake?" He asked.

"Yes."

"Gotta package for you. Just sign here."

Fey sighed the clipboard paper and said "thanks." As he passed her the square box.

She never was a very talkative person.

He tipped his hat and left.

Closing the door with her foot, she read the label.

It must have been the new headphones she had ordered. She'd been waiting for a month and had been beginning to think they might never arrive.

Bringing it to the kitchen counter she sliced through the tape with a kitchen knife and took out the shiny headphone box.

"Yaaaass!" She whispered excitedly as she pulled out the gleaming black headphones. They had black kitty ears.

After getting some cold oatmeal from the fridge and heating it up, she sat at the small kitchen table and read all the instructions.

She barely ever was able to buy anything new, and she had saved up for these for months. Her mother had persuaded her into getting them—not that Fey hadn't wanted to—on the contrary she had wanted them very much, but she had thought it would be better to spend the money on practical things. Like food and rent. But her mother had said she should do something for herself for a change, and it had been her birthday last week.

She suddenly looked the clock and realized it 7:29 and would be late. She didn't feel in the mood for immediate detention.

She dashed to her room after hastily placing her bowl in the sink, and stuffed her books and things into her backpack. She was out the door within 3 minutes and was dashing down the street to the bus stop when she saw through the corner of her eye, across the street in the bough of a tree, what looked like a monkey.

Wait, she thought, a monkey?

But she was around the corner before her brain had fully comprehended it.

The bus stop was ahead and she saw her best friend (and only for that matter) Lucy, waiting for her, about to board the bus. She waved, and as Fey ran up, painting to catch her breath, Lucy asked "you almost missed the bus! Why are you so late?"
