CHAPTER 5: BREAK A LEG (LITERALLY)

Listening to 60's french pop on the way to work Ne Me Laisse Pas L'Aimer by Brigitte Bardot was interrupted by a call from Kanna's workplace. "Hello, yes this is her. She what?! Yeah okay, I'll be there to take her home. Thank you." Groaning Nova parked into Eri's school's lot, picking her up before heading to the hospital. The silver-haired girl opened the passenger side and greeted her nanny.

"Hey, angel! I hate to do this to you, but I have to go pick up Kanna from the hospital. She had an accident and broke her left leg. I have to call Hito and ask him to pick you up." Eri smiled at Nova. "No worries! I hope Kanna is okay!"

Before pulling out of the parking lot, Nova dialed Hitoshi's number. "Hey, supernova! What's up?" a slight red hue formed on her cheeks and the tip of her nose due to the cute nickname Shinso had given her weeks before. "So bad news and good news. The bad news is that Kanna broke her leg and is in the hospital BUT the good news is that now you get to spend the day with Eri!" You hear Eri giggle from the passenger seat.

"Okay yeah, I'm about to leave from work. Send me the information so I can pick up Eri. Be safe Nova." "Thanks, Hito. You too." Nova arrived at the hospital and texted Shinso the address. The receptionist asked for identification from Nova to check her in and then put Eri under as Nova's child. The two girls followed the lady's instructions and took a left down the long hallway and then searched for the 6th door on the right.

An older woman was in the room tending to Kanna. Nova recognized her as Maki, a nurse with an amazing plant quirk. "Good afternoon Nova. Who is this adorable little girl?" Before you could answer Hitoshi appeared behind you. "That would be my sister Eri. Hello ma'am, I'm Shinso Hitoshi." Maki greeted the two. Kanna opened her eyes to see the trio in her room.

"Oh, Maki you finally meet Nova's lover. Isn't the little unicorn the cutest kid you've ever seen?" Eri went to give Kanna a hug leaving her brother and nanny at the entrance with blushing faces. "He's not my lover. I'm Eri's nanny."

Maki smiled at the two of you and said "Oh dear don't worry about explaining it to me. Kanna is just a little loopy from the medicine that was given to calm her down about having to get a cast. For s surgical resident she sure is baby when getting her broken leg checked. She should be back to her normal self in a few hours."

Nova thanked Maki and the older nurse attended her other duties around the hospital. "Thanks for coming to pick up Eri I appreciate it," Nova stated as she watched Eri decorate Kanna's cast with stickers she had in her backpack. "You know I'll always come to save you from trouble superNova" He winked at her causing her face to heat up.

"Oh look Eri. Your brother is flirting with Nova. Hopefully, they'll kiss" Kanna whispered for only the 11-year-old to hear. Eri giggled and yelled kiss as she noticed the proximity of the two young adults. Hitoshi stepped away from the nanny and asked Eri to collect her things.

"I'm glad you're okay Kanna and I hope your leg heals quickly." Before the indigo-haired man could leave Kanna hobbled up to stand on her feet. "Hey hero the least you could do is help me to the car. Nova here has spaghetti noodles for arms so she can't help me." Hitoshi sighed having to live in the awkward moment of his little sister wanting to kiss her nanny for a longer period of time.

Nova gathered all of the things that belonged to Kanna and lead the group towards her car. Unlocking the door, Hitoshi helped Kanna into the vehicle. "Nova! I'm starving! Please feed me!" Shoving Kanna's head into her car Nova shut the door. "Thanks again Hitoshi. I'll see you guys tomorrow." Eri hugged her nanny and then her brother leads her to the car. "You should take them lunch Oshi. Nova always takes you lunch..."

Hitoshi was a smart guy and he knew that his sister was sneaky but the only way he could figure out what she was up to was to go along with it. "You know what I will take them some food but on one condition." The ruby-eyed girl nodded eagerly. "Tell me why you want me to kiss Nova so bad"

At Nova's apartment, she began to look for ingredients to make Kanna something to eat since her whining began to annoy her. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Opening it up she sees none other than Hitoshi and Eri. "We brought you guys food since Kanna was starving. You heard yelling from the living room "Nova for the love of this planet if you don't give this guy some action, I will find someone who will. He is an angel!" rolling your eyes you let the two into your small home.

"As you can see, she has no problem pimping me out for food. I need a better best friend." Shinso laughed and placed the food down at the table while Eri helped Kanna off the couch. "Are you eating?" Nova asked Hitoshi. He nodded "Yeah I missed lunch today, but the brat ate her meal on the way. You mind if she takes over the living room?" You shook her head while Hitoshi sets up kid-friendly anime for Eri to keep busy.

"So, hero when's the last time you had some action? I need at least one of my friends to have juicy stories to tell me because Nova here is basically a born-again virgin" Kanna said bluntly. Nova smacked her with a hand towel. "Kanna that's personal!" the taller brunette watched as her best friend's face turned a shade of pink as she set the table for the 3 adults to eat.

"Well sorry to disappoint you Kanna but I haven't been with anyone for the last 2 or 3 years so if Nova is a born-again virgin I probably am too." Kanna rolled her eyes "I need to get more exciting friends." Nova filled her plate with food and then spoke: "well then tell us about your love life since we're so boring to you." "Yeah, I'd love to hear about that" Shinso chuckled.

"Fine, I will! The last person I slept with was a fellow residency student but in the end, he transferred to a hospital closer to his family basically across the country. That was a year ago and now mama is on the prowl again, but I'd love it if Nova got a boyfriend before me. She hasn't dated anyone since Shindo that asshat."

Hitoshi's curiosity peaked when hearing about Nova's ex-boyfriend. "I'm guessing that didn't end well based on a few things I've heard here and there?" Kanna sighed "technically he never fucking ended it that piece of sh-" "Kanna that's enough." Nova removed herself from the table and picked up the plates to wash them. The last thing she wanted to think about was her ex.

"Listen because I care about Nov, I'm going to tell you about Shindo. I'm not an idiot I know you two like each other and are just being weird about it, but I swear if you do anything like he did I will chop you up. I know how to do it too; I'm practically a surgeon so remember that." The lilac hero nodded.

"Shindo was Nova's first real boyfriend and really her serious boyfriend, he was a hero like you so many people were jealous of her, but he only wanted Nova. At first, it was great. I had never seen her so happy and so in love, I honestly think they would be married by now if he hadn't left. He even gave her a promise ring right after he graduated and told Nova that once she graduated from high school he would propose for real. Despite how young they were everyone thought they would get married and both parents agreed to it." Hitoshi's throat went dry. She was ready to marry someone else. Kanna's story ended before she could get to the reason on why Nova was, so hell bent on staying single when Nova herself came back into the room.

"And then he had to move that's it, that's the story. I'm going to take a shower. Kanna will show you and Eri out. Thanks for lunch. I'll see you tomorrow." Shinso watched Nova walk towards her room and shut her door. Kanna noticed his worried expression.

"Don't blame yourself, I'm the one that kept telling you about Shindo. I only told you because I need you to sort out your feelings for her. Don't give her some false hope if you aren't ready to commit. She deserved better than that."

"Nova deserves to be given the world. She's practically perfect in every way but I don't know if I'm ready for that yet. I need more time to figure it all out Kanna." Shinso helped her back to the couch and then began to gather Eri's things.

"Thanks for the lunch Shinso and thanks to little unicorn for making your brother bring the lunch. I'll tell Nova you guys said bye." The two guests nodded and left. On the way home all that Hitoshi could think about was whether he would be enough to love Nova the way she deserves.
