Steven sat on his bed, slowly rocking his child with exhaustion. He sighed as the baby continued to cry, and deep down in his heart he was boiling with anger. Part of him wanted to just drop her off somewhere and then it'd be over, but he shook off the thought every time it crossed his mind. That was not an option. He had promised this baby's mother that he would take care of her, no matter what. And on top of that, this child was a gem. If she was anything like Steven, she'd be dangerous to any human that picked her up, and confusing to any gem that picked her up. Either way, they wouldn't properly be able to take care of her. This was Steven's job.
Lost in thought, Steven began to doze off, but was snapped back awake by the sound of his baby still crying her lungs out. He sighed again, going back to rocking her. "Mickie, I fed you, like, thirty minutes ago.. And you don't need a change.. What's up with you tonight..?" Steven asked, his tired eyes landing on the child's inverted, heart-shaped gem.
As soon as Mickie heard her father's voice, she started to calm down. Her fists shrunk back down to a natural size, as they had grown during her outburst. Steven hadn't even noticed that they had grown, and flinched as he took note that Spinel's powers were already starting to reflect on the new hybrid.
The sudden movement of Steven's realization caused Mickie to choke up yet again and almost begin sobbing before Steven shushed her in a slight panic. "No, no, it's okay, sweetie! It's alright."
Mickie quieted down, looking up at Steven with her large magenta eyes, another feature she inherited from her mother.
Steven smiled, relief finally settling over him. "Thank gosh," he said quietly, his voice not in a full whisper. He still continued to rock the child to try and get her to fall asleep. He found himself humming to her to calm her down even further, and before he knew it, Mickie was fast asleep.
The boy relaxed, carefully adjusting himself on his bed as to not wake up the finally sleeping baby. He leaned back, resting his head on his headboard. He looked down at Mickie who was still sleeping peacefully in his lap, and smiled again.
Steven, finally satisfied with Mickie's condition, and the silence, dozed off again.
