Before being crippled by The Joker, Barbara Gordon was an accomplished crime fighter called batgirl. She fought crime alongside Batman and Robin. Before becoming Batgirl, Barbara wanted to join the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD), but her father, Commissioner Gordon, would'nt allow it. That is the reason as to why she took up crime fighting. She was crippled when Joker shot her in the spine, and she was paralyzed from the waist downwards.
