It has been 10 years since that incident, the way my new life started. I'm now seventeen years old. Things have gone back to normal, except me, I'm never normal. People started to forget my real name, instead, they started calling me the Hunter, though they didn't know who exactly is the Hunter. Nobody lived to tell the story. When I wasn't the Hunter I was Ophelia, Ophelia Diaz. More people know me by 'the girl with the snow-white hair' than my real name.
The Lady in Black wasn't all so bad as everyone made her up to be. I mean, yes there were times when she snapped, bad, but doesn't everybody? To me she went by the name Lara Fauns. She had raised me to who I am today. She raised me to be independent and taught me all my sword-wielding skills.
At last, I reached the dark, wooden door of our house.
''I'm home!" I shouted into the house walking in.
"Lia! Hello dear. Did you find the Coco flowers?
"Yeah. What are you making?"I asked leaning in to see.
"Smell it," she told me "what do you smell?"
"It smells like paint thinner and bad decisions," I answered.
"Perfect!"
I shook my head playfully and smiled. I walked over to the bookshelf and took out my notebook and started writing down my day so far. It helped me keep track of things. It was a perfect weather outside. Too bad I have to stay inside today.
"Lia?"
"Yeah?" I said not looking up.
"How many targets do you have this week?" She sat down in front of me.
"Not a lot actually, I guess not many people hate each other lately."
That was my job. The assassin of the town. As I said before nobody knew who I was. Nobody lives to tell the tail. I usually got mail from my clients telling me who they want me to finish off and, of course, the money. Also, they don't know who I am and neither do I know who they are. It's all kept anonymous.
This is the reason I avoid all kinds of communication with the outside world. I never know which sicko ordered me to kill somebody because the "target" didn't meet their expectations.
I might also be the reason everyone is so fake around here. Put on fake smiles and dig out the politeness which before had been long lost. I can't escape this life even if I wanted to. It's too late.
There is a knock in the door.
"I'll get it." She said and walked to the front door. It was a royal guard.
"Good afternoon miss Fauns. Is Ophelia Diaz home?"
"Coming!" I said walking to the door.
"Good afternoon to you too Miss Diaz, I am here to fulfil the order his Highness, Prince Elijah the First, assigned me to, to escort you to the royal palace." He looked at Lara "Alone".
"Well he's straightforward," I told Lara. "Wait, you mean like, right now?" I turned back to the guard.
"Yes, Miss Diaz." He answered.
"But I need to put on something presentable!" I said realizing what was happening. I looked down to see what I was wearing. Brown camo pants and an off-shoulder white blouse.
"That won't be necessary"
I turned to Lara.
"Go. You'll tell me everything when you get back at sundown. Won't she?" She turned to the guard.
"She certainly will"
"Okay then. Go. I'll wait for you here." She smiled.
I smiled back.
The guard gestured me outside. There was a royal carriage.
"Hey, what's your name?" I asked the guard. I don't like calling him that.
"You can call me Julian miss" he answered.
I got on the carriage and Julian closed the door behind me. He started the carriage and I realized. What the hell have I been summoned for? Have the higher forces found out about me? No. I don't think they would bring me to the palace in a fancy carriage with its very own chauffeur.
Anyway, I'm not taking any chances. I look out the window, the streets are empty. I could easily jump out and make a run for it. It was also getting dark now so if Julian chased after me, I could hide. I reached for the handle and tried opening the door but it won't budge. I started frantically trying to open the door but it was useless, it is locked.''Don't try Miss. I've been warned you might escape. I must ask you to sit tight and wait until we arrive at the castle. I promise on behalf of His Highness that we mean no harm.'' he explained to me, not taking his eyes off the road.
