"Sophie."
"no, n-no-"
"Sophie!"
"H-Harper, no, stop...."
"SOPHIE."
I jolt awake in the darkness, unaware of my surroundings, until I grab a fistful of sheets and I realise where I am. I blink a few times, trying to recover from the never-ending nightmare, hugging my knees to my chest. It's that dream again. That same one that's happened every night this week. It's the one I had in the hospital, the one where I'm running down the endlessly malevolent halls of the Asylum, following Harper's voice, trying to reach him, but never being able to.
"Sophie, help, please."
I turn to look at Harper, relieved that he's there, in the exact same position, knees to his chest and rocking back and forth.
"Soph, I need my medicine."
I shake my head, still not fully registering what the hell is going on. "What?"
"I need my medication, Soph, just do something, wake up my mum,
s-something."His voice is really shaking, and that is enough to wake me up a little bit.
"I thought you said it didn't work."
"It does sometimes, just g-get it, p-please."
I crawl out of Harper's bed, but fall on the ground the second my feet touch the floor. I grip the bed spread to help me stand up, wobbling towards the door, before I realise my current issue.
"Where is it?"
He looks up from his knees, but it's too dark to see his expression. "I d-don't know, my mum h-hides it from me."
I feel around the wall for a light switch, finding it next to the door and flipping it on. Harper's got his face buried in his knees again, rocking back and forth, making small sniffling sounds. I look at the clock. 2 am.
Shit.
How the hell did I sleep that long?
Before I can start worrying about my mum, and if she knows I'm here, Harper makes a sort of choking sound. I look around frantically.
"Where's your mums room?"
Harper looks up again, cheeks wet with tears from his bloodshot eyes. "Like, two doors d-down."
Still groggy, I move as quickly as my muscles allow out the door and into the hallway. I can't really see anything, resulting in me falling on my face once, but my eyes adjust eventually enough so that I can see more than two feet in front of me. Using the wall for support, I feel my way down the hall until I reach another closed door. I don't know anything about this house. At all. I'm guessing this is Julie's room.
I knock at first, but when nothing happens I just give up and open the door. The room is just as dark as the hallway. How convenient! Not.
"Um, Mrs. Dark?"
No answer.
"Mrs. Dark."
Still no answer.
God, this is awkward.
"Julie, it's about Harper ."
This time, there's some rustling sounds, and a lamp turns on beside the bed, which is against the far wall. It provided enough light for me to see a very tired Julie sit up and rub her eyes.
"W-What? W-Who are you... oh."
She seems to recollect herself for a moment. "Oh no.""He says he needs his medicine. He told me to wake you. I apologise for... uh.... falling asleep."
