Generations ago, Hybrids were first created in science labs as a way to enhance already existing human characteristics by binding the DNA with that of animals.

Originally, all hybrids had physical animal characteristics. But as scientists found that with the added animal instincts, hybrids had three levels of dominance. Alphas, the most dominant; Betas, the most like humans; and Omegas, the submissive but parental ones. So the ABO (also known as alpha-beta-omega) was created as a caste system. Alphas and betas were married off to rich and powerful humans while omegas were left to breed among themselves. Thus, alphas and betas lost their physical animal characteristics over time and omegas didn’t, but neither lost their animalistic instincts and nature.

Hybrids didn’t present until some time around their 18th birthday, but because of the caste system, the second genders tended to stay the same within families. If there were any inconsistencies, it was often a beta being born to an alpha family or vise versa, but never omegas.

Omegas were kept on the outskirts of society, either in the countryside or rundown neighborhoods at the edges of big cities. The only contact they had with the rest of the world were from their alpha landlords and the omega community around them. But that often was not sufficient. Omegas weren’t allowed higher education because it wasn’t available to them, and most were, homeschooled anyways. There were some schools for them, but most only went up to 8th grade and were very outdated.

On the other side of the spectrum, Alphas and Betas lived anywhere from the suburbs to skyscrapers. They often held professions of importance and had access to any service they could ever want or need.

Now, a couple hundred years after the first hybrids were created, the traditional views on how society should work was beginning to change among the younger generation. Interrace couples were becoming more common, and omegas were beginning to be given more opportunities to leave behind their desolate lives and join society for the first time since hybrids were made. They were also finding that maybe this was the way it was meant to be all along.

Everyone knew about mates, but most ignored their attraction so as not to be disgraced by society. But now, people were beginning to seek out their fated partner.

Among the many other changes beginning to occur, the first mixed-race college was created, inviting all races and genders on its campus. This is where the story begins
