A little girl sat in the corner of her bedroom crying, her knees to her chest. The girl's bedroom wasn't pink or filled with pictures of princesses like you would expect. It was a white room, with one blood red feature wall. For a little girl at the age of ten you wouldn't think her favourite colour would be blood red.
She sat there hugging her knees, her head laying on her lightly shaking legs. The door to her bedroom opened quietly and slowly and in the blink of an eye her mother was kneeling in front of her. The little girl's mother picked her up with ease and quietly carried her down the stairs before walking down a second set of stairs that lead into the basement. She felt her mother shifting her in her arms, clicking sounds and then the door to the safe room opening.
The safe room was a small box room that was hidden behind a wall full of tools, to make it blend in. Inside the room there were a few monitors showing different parts of the house, a hidden camera in most of the rooms. Off to the side of the room there was a small single bed, at the end of the bed sat a box full of canned food and another box beside it full of other supplies. A first aid kit included.
The little girl had never been sure why they had this room, she thought it would never be needed, but now she was glad that the room was there. Her mother closed the door behind them and kissed the girl's head. "What's happening?" The little girl asked, her voice shaking, as she looked up at her mother.
The girl hugged her mother tightly, from the moment she had woken she had known that something was wrong.
"Everything is going to be okay sweetie." The mother cooed. "Don't you worry, just try and stay as quiet as you can." The little girl nodded her head in response, her mother played with her hair trying to calm her before putting her down on the small bed.
The door to the safe room opened suddenly, making her mother turn around and stand in front of her daughter protectively. Peeking her head from behind her mother the girl's eyes brightened when she saw her father standing at the door.
"Nicolas." Her mother sighed and relaxed visibly as he closed the door and walked over to her, instantly she checked him over for injuries. He chuckled softly leaning down to gently kiss her lips. Looking over his wife's shoulder he smiled at his daughter. However, it was not a smile of happiness, more relief than anything seeing that his little girl was safe.
There was a bang from upstairs.
Whimpering slightly, the girl hugged her knee's tightly, as she had in her bedroom before. "You need to stay here okay, honey? Don't come out, no matter what." The little girl nodded her head as she looked between her parents who wore worried expressions. "Are you coming back?"
Her parents looked at each other before looking back at their daughter, they smiled sadly, as though they didn't believe their next words. "Yeah." Nicolas spoke hesitantly and quietly before he kissed her head, his wife copied his actions before her attention went to the security cameras.
She checked the screens before she walked to the door of the safe room, Nicolas's arm gently wrapped around her waist. "We love you Alvara." They both spoke before he opened the door and the two of them walked out into the basement, the door closed behind them, locking in place. Alvara didn't move from her spot on the bed and pulled the cover up over her head, she stayed like that until she heard the men shouting upstairs.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!" Quite a rough looking man shouted as he wandered around the house, three other men stood behind him. The obvious leader of the group chuckled, a low, deep chuckle that made Alvara's stomach twist. The little girl quickly pulled the cover off of her and ran over to watch the security cameras.
Alvara saw the four men standing in the living room, they looked around clearly looking for something or someone specific. Her eyes moved to a different monitor showing the basement, to see her parents still there, not too far away from the secret door. They were looking into each other's eyes, their fingers entwined.
