The Cat had been following her since she found that blood stained book under the brush in the enchanted forest just outside the castle’s protection. Willow had not looked inside of it yet because when her hand reached for the cover the cat would hiss and claw at the air. The only place where she could escape the following, monotonous eyes of the cat was the castle catacombs. When Willow neared the entrance to the underground, the cat would yowl, her fur would stick up on end . Her eyes would spark like lightning bolts, Then the cat who she had come to call Nyx would run off, who knows where it went.

It was a cloudy day in Calabria. Distant thunder echoed around the kingdom walls, sounding as though the storm was at ground level. Lightning thrashed in fiery tendrils just outside the castle walls. Willow rested by her window, examining the land she would claim one day. She watched the sheep roam the prairie beyond the castle barrier. She noticed how the sheep would always stay by their lambs, nuzzling into them to keep them warm against the biting cold.

Willow sighed heavily, grabbing a lantern from a small white bedside table. She skidded to the window. out side of it sat the cat, peering curiously through the window, her eyes bright like stars. The cat meowed lightly. Surprised, Willow stepped back. How did you get all the way up here? she thought, then dismissed it and shut the window and quickly drew the curtains. Willow slipped through her room and out the door.

Willow wandered through the halls. She held her lantern, the brass cold to the touch. The eyes of the tapestries seemed to follow her as she walked. She shrieked when she saw Nyx lurking behind her, the same mysterious eyes as the paintings. The way to the catacombs were always dark and maniacal. She would not find the courage if it did not mean that the cat would finally leave her alone, or why it was afraid of the catacombs in the first place.
