A creak, footsteps coming near, and then,-

"Avery! I told you to put that book away and go to sleep an hour ago!" Avery's mom sighed as she came in to check on her. "Why do you read so late? You know that you need the sleep."

"Sorry mum. It's just such a good book, I need to know what's going to happen to Liam"

"Liam can wait. You do remember that school starts tomorrow?"

"Yeah, mum. I'll go to sleep now. G'night." How could I possibly forget school, I thought as mum left and I flicked off my nightlight. School was always a nightmare, since we were constantly moving because of dad's job as an archaeologist. We've been to so many places I can hardly count. I've seen Stonehenge, the pyramids of Giza, and even the Amazon rainforest. But all I want is to stop moving and stay someplace where I can make friends without knowing I'll have to leave them behind. This time I'm determined not to get friendly with my peers and survive until the next move.

I rolled over and closed my eyes, falling into a sleep and dreaming about Liam.

"Avery!" mum called up the stairs, "Come on, you're going to be late for school."

"UGH! Coming mum!"

I dragged myself out of bed and yanked on some comfortable clothes.

As I ran down the stairs, mum hollered "Hurry up, honey, the bus should be here any moment now!"

I raced into the kitchen, swiped a bagel off the table and grabbed my bag from the hook. With a quick good-bye hug, I was out the door.

As the bus turned the corner, I took a deep breath. The doors opened and I walked on. Everyone stopped and craned their necks to see the new girl. I walked down the aisle and took a seat by myself.
