The Unknown was born just like any other kid. Seeing a life set out for them by their parents as a scientist, they took to school and enjoyed their classes quite fondly. While they did not have many friends, occasionally teachers would check in on them and they would share nice conversations together. One of The Unknown's goals was always to be on the news, specifically on televised news. The Unknown wanted one day to be able to share their invention to the world, whatever that invention happened to be. They craved more non-binary scientist role models to look up to while growing up. The Unknown knew that they wanted to create a way for anybody to change their body no matter how drastic or minor, that was their idea of a free world. Of course, even though their parents had begun as extremely supportive of The Unknown's projects, it ended shortly after the augmentation experiments began. As The Unknown attempted to make the gas that Chief's Company would eventually learn to make, drastic side effects ensued. Eventually the side effects became so bad that The Unknown had to stay home from school for weeks.
During their weeks at home, The Unknown was banned from all sorts of experiments and told to get ample rest and to take care of themselves to the best of their ability. That's when their biology teacher began emailing them in a rush, they had always gotten along quite nicely and she was typically very eloquent. The emails in question discussed news stories that were being "hidden from the media" about an alien crash landing on Earth. Apparently treaties were signed as only one of the aliens survived, and didn't want to deal with having their face in the papers. The Unknown wanted to meet this alien in real life, if anybody could help them with their experiments it was a higher life form. Evidently one that had discovered space travel and used it to get to Earth.
On the other hand, the alien blended quite well into Earth's society. It typically wore a turtleneck sweater (to hide it's long neck) and shades to disguise it's sun beaten eyes. It was rumored that you could tell it was the alien as soon as you saw the eyes, because they were never able to adjust to the intensity of Earth's sun and always looked on the verge of tears. The Unknown went searching across the internet for more information and was quite disappointed to find out that the alien had adapted so well to Earth's society that it already had an email. The Unknown sent one off and they began to chat while The Unknown was sick in bed.
It cannot be said that The Unknown was solely to blame for Chief's eventual ideas, but an alien and a teenager who are both unfamiliar with the restraints that they may be faced with were an unstoppable team. Of course, The Unknown pretended like all the leads had dried up to their biology teacher to keep her initial excitement going. If she had known that there was a simple email address that she could talk directly with the alien, then all the fun and mystery would be gone. The Unknown also enjoyed having a pen pal who had travelled the stars, although scientifically advanced was not necessarily true. Space had just become another place to tour, and the milky way had been a detour in its flight. Chief had no training as an astronaut, it merely worked a factory job until it was called overseas, or more accurately, over-stars.
The Unknown watched now as Plum and Jasmine fought for their lives against them. It was rather sad really, how weak human bodies were in comparison to newly transformed ones, while that was entirely not the point that The Unknown had set out upon. The Unknown was quite baffled by Plum though, as she had to have been hit from the gas, they were there when it happened. Through it all, Plum seemed entirely unremarkable to them, and that annoyed The Unknown down to their core. It was a bitter soapy feeling inside every molecule of The Unknown that made them tense up with rage upon seeing Plum's cherry eyes and small lips. Her human skin that still reeked of the odour blood-filled veins dispersed amongst it's captors. The Unknown had offered her a way out of all that, a way to be free of the human curse that so many people had been stuck with for centuries, yet she had denied it so thoroughly, and then it all made sense.
