Ryan was drunk.
Which was what made him think this was a good idea.
It had started with a few beers, trying to drown out his feelings. And then he had made the mistake of turning on music, music that reminded him of her, of their time together.
His knee bounced as the phone rang, waiting for her to pick up. He was going to do the dumbest thing he could think of — try to convince her to leave her boyfriend and date him instead.
Ryan knew this was wrong, he knew he shouldn't be doing this. But the beer told him it was a good idea and beer has never lied to him or led him astray.
Yet.
In his defense — he had seen her first, he had been with her first. It was kindergarten logic, Ryan was aware but the beer made it make sense.
He had been dumb enough to let what was between them fizzle because he was scared to commit to a relationship and she moved on, she had found somebody to commit to her. It killed him to see them together, knowing his hands had been on every piece of her and her hands had been on all of him.
But Ryan wasn't scared anymore.
His plan was simple — he was going to confess his feelings to her and tell her to break up with her boyfriend. They hadn't been dating long, he knew she didn't love him.
Not when he caught her sneaking glances at him anytime they were in any sort of close proximity. And he knew without a doubt that she didn't look at her boyfriend the way she looked at him -- lust mixed with love.
"Hello?" Her voice was groggy, confused. "What's going on?"
Ryan's face flushed, he hadn't meant to wake her up. Scratching the back of his neck, he tried to pull himself together.
Act cool.
This was going to be harder than he thought.
"I just wanted to call and see what was up." He winced.
Smooth, dumbass.
"Ryan." She let out a sigh. He could hear her shifting like she was getting out of bed.
His bed.
"Break up with him." Ryan blurted, unable to contain himself any longer. He had planned on taking a tactful approach but this would have to do.
"What?" She hissed, clearly taken back by Ryan's statement. "Are you drunk?"
"What?" Ryan scoffed a little, trying to laugh it off but she didn't laugh with him. "Maybe a little?" He finally admitted. "But seriously, I know you don't love him."
"Ryan, I-" Ryan cut her off.
"I see the way you look at me. You don't look at him like that. Cut your losses, break up with him. We could be so great together." Ryan bit the inside of his lip.
There was a long silence and Ryan felt the need to fill it. "You can't deny that what we had was great. I fucked it up because I was afraid but I'm not afraid anymore. I want you, I want us and everything that comes with it. Stop stringing him along -- it's not fair."
"Ryan..." Her voice trailed off. "Have you even thought about the fall out of this? What would we tell him, what would we tell everybody? It would be so bad."
Ryan ran a hand through his hair. He hadn't thought about anything past this phone call. A small voice in the back of his mind was telling him that this risk was too great, there was too much at stake.
But a louder voice -- the one that was more than likely fueled by the alcohol -- told him they could figure it out.
Love conquers all or whatever, right?
"That can be tomorrow's problem." Even Ryan was surprised by the blase tone of his voice. "Look, I know you're thinking about it because if you weren't, you would have hung up on me."
"It's just not as simple as you're trying to make it." She murmured.
"It could be. Just rip it off like a band-aid. He's a big boy, he'll be okay." Ryan winced a little.
He sounded like a mega dick but all is fair in love and war, right?
"It's not like we won't have to see him again. We'd see him every weekend, there would be no escaping it." She pointed out.
"So? He'll be mad no matter what so I just say we rip it all off like a band-aid. He'll get over it." Ryan was trying to hide his impatience. Didn't she want him?
"Do you hear yourself right now?" She was not as great at concealing her disgust. "He's your best friend, Ryan. We aren't talking about somebody you don't know. We're talking about Chase."
Ryan swallowed hard. When she said it like that, even the alcohol was telling it was a bad idea.
But there was no coming back from this conversation, there was only one way forward. The fall out would be brutal but Ryan knew that if they ended this conversation and she didn't break up with Chase, the fall out would be even worse.
Ryan knew it was the alcohol obscuring the logic in his argument but he was past the point of caring. He just needed her back in his bed, needed to be the one she loved.
So Ryan was going to break the guy code, he was going to betray his best friend.
And he wasn't going to regret it in the morning.
"Break up with him."
