How you managed to do it, many are still left puzzled, but somehow—during your first year of high school—you accomplished the impossible: the stoic, often incomprehensible at times, Ushijima Wakatoshi became your boyfriend. Even now, you sometimes find yourself speechless at the thought, considering his intimidating reputation and insurmountable volleyball success that has followed him since his junior high days. Perhaps knowing Ushijima since elementary school and attending the same schools helped, but nevertheless it is a worthy accomplishment you're proud of.

Now, as you approach your second anniversary this winter, you're confronted with the bittersweet ache that comes at the price of growing older. In just three months, you'll both graduate and likely attend different universities. Having spent most of your lives together, practically inseparable, despite Ushijima's attempts to keep his distance back in your second year of junior high when your feelings first blossomed, you can't help but feel the weight of impending change. He may never admit it, but over time, he unconsciously began to look for your shadow out of the corner of his eye, scanning rooms for the top of your head.

When you finally confessed your feelings, his answer was simple and immediate. He had known for a while, even if all he said was, "Okay." It may have seemed understated, but for Ushijima, it was decisive—his only regret being that he didn't answer 0.001 seconds faster.

The winter holidays draw near and, unlike your love, the air has chilled remarkably. Soon the dorms will empty as everyone packs their suitcases to return home for winter break starting Monday. A select few choose to stay behind, typically those with club obligations or a desire for a quiet library, but seeing as you fall into neither of those categories, it's a mystery as to why you chose to stay. Or is it?

"Ushijima!" you call from the top of the steps leading to the third years' wing. He looks up, walking alongside Tendo, who gives him a playful jab in the ribs and a wave before hurrying off, leaving the two of you alone; he knows his cue to leave for once. You hurry down and bid Tendo a goodbye wave before turning back to Ushijima. "Most of the girls in my dorm are going home for the holidays on Friday. What about the boy's dorm?"

"Probably the same," he replies, his tone flat.

You smile, curiosity tugging at your lips, "And you?"

"The volleyball club has winter conditioning, so most of the team is staying."

Ushijima never ignores you, but hell his roundabout answers had a way with testing your patience sometimes. "Even the third years?" you press, trying to find the actual answer since, as of October, Ushijima technically finished his last season and isn't exactly obligated to attend club matters anymore.
