The early morning sun streaming in from Aleks's window proved too much for him to sleep through the next morning. He hadn't gotten that much sleep because of the reoccurring nightmares and even though he had placed a pillow over his head, it hadn't helped; it was still too bright in his room for him to keep sleeping. He stumbled out of bed towards his window and was about to pull the blinds down when he spotted Mr. and Mrs. Andrews and Jessica loading overnight bags into the back of their SUV.
Jessica helped her mother climb into the passenger seat and then closed the door. She walked around the back of the vehicle and helped her dad finish loading everything in. Aleks watched the two of them talk to each other for a moment and then Mr. Andrews wrapped his arms around Jessica and held her close for a while before brushing her hair back out of her face and kissing her on the forehead. The two of them then got into the SUV, backed out of the driveway, and drove off down the street.
For some reason Aleks began to feel a wave of panic wash over him. He was having serious second thoughts about what he had done with Mrs. Andrews's prescription. He sent Jess a text and then waited for her to answer. After waiting ten minutes and not hearing back from her he decided he had made a mistake, he didn't want Mrs. Andrews to die, not that way, not because of him; the guilt was going to be too much. He remembered he had the code for Jessica's back door so he threw on some clothes and let himself in. He planned to switch the prescription back. He had to, before it was too late.
It was a lot easier finding his way around their house during the day and it only took him a few minutes to get back into the upstairs bathroom. He pulled open the cabinet but the original prescription bottle was missing, just the new one was left on the shelf. Fuck, he uttered out loud. Jessica had mentioned that they were going to visit Mrs. Andrews's sister so they must have taken her original prescription with them. Fuck Fuck Fuck he said out loud again as he closed the cabinet and sent Jessica another text.
"Hey Jess, what r you up to?" He needed to find out where they were going. Maybe he could still get the prescription bottle back. Aleks knew he couldn't tell her; obviously he would need to do this without her knowing he had switched them.
Jessica responded with a text letting him know that they were off to her aunts, her mom's sister's house in Salem. They were going to spend the weekend there and that they would be returning until Sunday evening. Full on panic was now consuming Aleks. He would have to drive up to Salem and find a way to switch the old prescription pills back. It was his only chance to prevent a possible overdose but he needed to make the switch without Jessica finding out.
He left the bathroom and went into her parent's bedroom to see if there was something that might have a name or an address on it. He found nothing in their bedroom so he moved on to Mr. Andrews's study. He started by rummaging through the papers that were scattered across his desk and then went through the various drawers but still found nothing that might lead him to their location. Aleks was beginning to think he was hooped when he spotted a file cabinet in the corner of the study. He tried the top drawer and it was unlocked so he opened it up. Inside there were various folders, including one that had Jessica's name on it. That was strange he thought as he picked it up. Inside there was a picture of what looked like Jessica as a baby and adoption papers. Holy shit Aleks muttered to himself. Jessica was adopted. How had he not known, did Jessica even know he wondered. He skimmed through the rest of the folder and then put it back. He didn't have time, he needed to find a name or an address for her mom's sister or shit was going to go badly.
Aleks left the study and went downstairs. He picked up the house phone and checked the last calls that were dialed out. Sure enough, one was to her sister's house. He took the phone number and ran a reverse address look up on his cellphone and found the street address to where they lived.
