𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐊𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐎𝐌𝐘 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐘, which didn't seem promising considering this was Y/N's first impression of her auntie's work. The beautiful but slightly forgotten building cast a large shadow in the cloudy sky. The Fairchild estate truly was as creepy as she had anticipated, courtesy of Kate's erratic midnight calls. Although she seemed truly frazzled, Y/N knew that the slightly not-so-sane gene that inhabited her mother, was passed down to Kate. She was never planning on revealing the news to her, despite the doctors advice to. Besides, Kate had found somewhere quiet to live with a sweet little girl for company. And from Y/N had heard, a not-so-sweet teenage boy.
Y/N entered the house, greeting Mrs. Grose and taking her bags upstairs. Sure, Y/N wasn't proud of loosing her mom and private school spot all in one day, but she wasn't ashamed despite how well-off this family seemed. Dropping her suitcase on her bed, she heard a door creak. A tall, lanky boy with dark curls and deep brown eyes was leaning against the open door. The hazy sunlight melted down the razor-sharp jut of his cheekbones, dappled with freckles. His hair was a mess of black curls, a few falling around his face. His eyes were a deep brown, laced with loneliness and longing, and were slightly red as though he had been crying. A black sweater hung from his skinny frame, and his puffy, pink lips were curved into a smile. A rare sight for some.
Y/N thinks he might just be made of magic.
Y/N tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear and leant against the suitcase she just placed on her bed.
"Hey, um, you must be Miles. You know, you look a lot different than I imagined. Maybe you could, show me the place sometime? I mean, it's pretty big."
"Yeah, you were expecting some creepy, phsyco-looking freak weren't you? I can hear what Kate tells you on the phone. But I suppose you didn't get much different."
Y/N walked towards him and placed her hand on his cheek, his saddened expression and broken eyes piercing into her like a knife.
"Well I can tell you that I didn't really believe the stuff Kate was spinning on the phone to me. Being all alone in this house must be pretty lonely sometimes, and she doesn't really take into account that people deal with grief differently. You aren't a freak. You don't look like a phsyco. You look like an angel to me, so don't pity yourself too much. Not everyone is lucky with looks."
A single tear rolled down Miles' cheek as he leant into Y/N's hand. She wiped away his tear and showed him a smile.
Y/N had never felt like this before. This broken boy, who has unravelling at the seams, felt like an angel to her touch. His presence made her smile. She didn't want to fix him, she wanted him to heal. And her touch had already healed a small part of him.
Miles on the other hand, had felt contentment for one second of his life since his parents death. He wasn't angry for once. He wasn't alone.
Miles showed Y/N the horses, telling her his interest in them and how he would like to teach her to ride. Y/N and Miles re-entered the house, walking into the kitchen. Kate looked up from her cup of coffee and flashed Y/N a smile.
"I thought you arrived like an hour ago? Where have you been?" Kate asked.
"Oh, Miles was just showing me the horses. You didn't seem to be around so I thought you were busy with Flora."
"I was just worried that's all. Anyways, show me your room, I'll help you unpack." Kate offered.
The two took off to help unpack Y/N's suitcase and make her room somewhat comfy. After they were finished, and Y/N's suitcase was tucked underneath her bed, she went to try and find Miles.
"Hey Kate, do you know where Miles' room is?"
"Down that hall and it's on the end. Why? You know he hates me Y/N, and he's rude and ungrateful, and nasty. He's mentally unstable, he smashed a boys head on the bathroom tiles! Why are you talking to him?" Kate asked, her voice getting louder and angrier at each statement she made.
"Look Kate, I appreciate you letting me stay here after my mom killed herself, and I got expelled from an elite school for beating up a student who almost exposed the fact I played a role in my owns fathers cold case murder, but I am so so sorry if I bruised your fucking ego by talking to the only attractive boy my age in the vicinity!" Y/N replied sarcastically, turning to walk towards Miles' room.
She slammed the door behind her and found Miles' room. She knocked lightly to receive a quiet "come in!". She walked into the room, littered with multiple guitars and music equipment. Miles looked up and smiled at her, patting at a spot next to him on his bed. Y/N sat down, wiping away the one tear that streamed down her face. Miles saw it, and put an arm around her.
"I'm sorry about your mom. I wasn't eavesdropping, but you were kind of shouting. I know what it's like to lose a parent."
Y/N nuzzled into Miles, letting herself cry a little harder. Miles let a tear slip from his tired eyes, pulling Y/N closer, hugging her fully as she cried quietly. Y/N picked her head up and kissed Miles cheek, tasting a salty tear that sat on his freckled cheek. The pair of broken souls smiled at each other, looking into each others eyes and understanding each others pain as fully as their own. It was the first night Miles had slept properly in 2 years, Y/N in his arms providing him with a sense of comfort and just one inkling of hope that he wasn't a complete freak.
