Months passed, and I adapted to my new lifestyle that now included new friends.  I began to work hard in school, and I ended up signing up for art class.  Rainy days were still my favorite though.  And on a rainy day as the sun came out, I decided to go outside and see if I could spot the rainbow.  When I walked outside, I was surprised to see Matt in my front yard.
"Um hi?"
"Hey." he said shyly.  He walked towards me and took something from out of his pocket.  It was a pencil.  I looked at him with a puzzled look on my face.
"I just wanted to give you back your pencil."
That's when it hit me.  Yes, I had let him borrow my pencil a few days ago.  Yet, it had been raining all day...
"How long were you standing there?" I said, worried he had been standing out in the rain.
He laughed and I realized how cute he looked when he laughed.
"Not that long really.  But I wouldn't have minded anyway.  I like rainy days."
"You do?" I asked and he smiled at me.
"Yes I do.  They are my favorite, because when the sun comes out the rainbow appears and it's really beautiful."
"Funny.  I walked out to see if I could spot it."
"Well if you look right between the clouds you can barely see it."  He gently turned my chin to the right.
I squinted and there it was.
"Do you see it?" he asked.
I looked at him with his dimpled smile, dark hair and bright green eyes.  His optimism had already started to rub off and I had to admit it was contagious.  And I realized the rainbow to my rainy day was right in front of me all along.
He repeated his question.
"Do you see it?"
His gaze met mine and I smiled.
"Yes, I do."

This leads me back to the beginning, because the person beside me now is no longer telling me we're alone. The only thing said between us  now is our promise to never leave each other. Because every rainy day needs a rainbow to remind us we're not alone...you're not alone.
