"Dad, Priya.....I have something important to tell you guys..."
Jamal sat down in concern as Priya reached out to hold his hand. They had no idea. Madeline took a deep breath in, trying to prepare herself for what she was about to say. Oh god. This was not going to go well.
"Madeline, darling, what's wrong? You look like you've just seen a ghost!" Priya said.
"Yes, you're worrying me. What's wrong?"
Madeline felt even queasier than before and it wasn't just because of the morning sickness. "Okay... well technically I'm not meant to tell you until the end of the first trimester but I'm sick of keeping this a secret-"
"Trimester....? Madeline?!" Jamal exclaimed.
"Oh boy..."
Jamal hopped up angrily. "Trimester?! MADELINE, ARE YOU PREGNANT?!"
Priya gasped and popped her hand over her mouth.
"Dad, I-"
"PREGNANT?! YOU'RE PREGNANT?!"
"DAD! Calm down! Let me explain!"
"Yes, sweetheart, maybe she's right..."
"PREGNANT?!"
Madeline rolled her eyes and stood up. "Dad! Sit down and let me explain!"
Jamal reluctantly sat down and Priya squeezed his hand. Priya was rather quiet about the pregnancy.
"I'm nearly three months along now. The father doesn't know but it's not Blake. That's why I broke things off with him."
Jamal was practically shaking from anger. "The father isn't Blake?! You cheated on your fiancé?! How could you be so reckless!? I thought you were done with all this foolishness! I swear, Manhattan is just not good for you-"
"Dad... I don't expect you to understand but Blake and I were in an... open relationship. We said we'd become exclusive after the wedding. So, no, I didn't cheat. But I didn't love him in the way a wife should love her husband so I knew marriage wasn't going to be right for us."
Jamal's face twisted into an unidentifiable expression. "Oh... uh..."
"Oh, Madeline, we're very happy for you darling," Priya finally interjected. "Shocked, but nonetheless, very happy for you. We will be with you every step of the way. You can come to lamaze classes with me!"
