Chapter 1

*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*

I snatch my phone from under my pillow and slide my thumb across the screen to stop the annoying beeping of my morning alarm.

7am? Already? But it was just 10pm, how is it morning already?

I slowly drag myself off of my canopy bed and trudge over to my bathroom. The walls are painted white, with white bathroom tiles and a giant mirror. I pull my blonde hair into a messy bun, except for the short strands that escaped my hair scrunchie. I brush my teeth, wash my face and mentally prepare myself for the day ahead.

I make my way down to the kitchen where my family is already sat at the counter eating breakfast without me.

Rude.

With eyes still adjusting to the bright kitchen lights, I take a seat at the counter .

"Good morning to you too sleeping beauty." my mum comments.
"Good morning Nicki." my voice is still croaky from tiredness.
"How did you sleep?" she asks taking a sip of her morning coffee.

Obviously that was a trick question.

"It was terrible. I had to lug twenty boxes into the house and up the stairs and unpack them by myself. I barely got any sleep and my back is killing me." I whine rubbing the palm of my hand on my lower back.
"Nobody told you to buy twenty boxes of shoes Nova" my older sister Brinley interjects as she places her dishes in the sink. None of which I will be washing.
Of everyone in the house Brinley hated doing chores the most. She wont even wash her own car. Brinley is 18 years old, with processed blond hair and bold brown eyes. She was definitely a head turner. And so was other sister Laila who is also 18, with her head full of blond curls and beach-ready body they were the center of attention everywhere they went. Even my dearest mother Nicki got constant stares from guys everywhere she went. Who could blame them though. Nicki was 5'2 with a size 28 waist and  size 40 hips. I could understand why men were always so eager to gawk at her. And me? I look like a potato.  Being the ugly one has its perks though, the spotlight isn't always on you and you never have to constantly keep up your appearance.

Nicki puts on her most sympathetic voice, "Aw my poor baby. Here have some pancakes." she shoves a plate of hot pancakes in front of me and my stomach growls in excitement. Before I could greedily stuff my face, there's a knock at the door.
No one acknowledges it.
There's a knock again. No one acknowledges it.

"Anybody wanna get that?"  I ask, my tone dry with annoyance.
"No thanks we're good." Laila replies, not even glancing away from here phone screen."
Still, Brinley didn't move from her laptop, Nicki didn't move from her cofee, Laila didn't move from her phone and I didn't move an inch away from my plate of delicious pancakes.
We simultaneously spun around at the sound of heels clicking across our hardwood floors.

"You guys should really lock your door." a familiar voice says

"Lola!" we simultaneously yelled at the sight of her.
Lola Lombardi was my best friend in the entire world. We've been inseparable since the first day I cut her hair while she was sleeping in pre-school. She was pretty mad at first but she got over it and she's been my favourite person in the world ever since.

Lola passes around giving everybody hugs and comes to me last. "Brinley, Laila, Nicki, you guys look great." And Nova... " she pauses grinning uncomfortably "You look like crap."

If there was anyone who was ever gonna tell me like it is. Its Lola.

"Oh I'm sorry. But its not my fault that everyone came back from summer break looking like supermodels and I still look like the same old Nova." I gesture to everyone in the room to emphasise my point.
