Chapter 6 - Table Manners

"Okay guys so when we get over there, I want you all to please act calm and don't embarrass me."
"Since when do you care what Ryder Powers thinks?" Andy asks curiously, eyebrows raised.
"Uh... I don't - It's just...whatever let's go." 

Lola, Andy, Piper, Ellie and I cautiously made our way into the lunch room.

"Oi Nova, over here." It was Ryder Powers, calling me from across the room. He gestured me over to his table. We all walked over and as soon as our butts touched down on the seats at Ryder's table, every head in the entire room snapped in our direction and the room was completely and utterly silent; so silent you could hear a pin drop.

"What? Haven't you all seen people sit and day before?" Travis yelled to the starting crowd of people. I guess it worked because everyone turned to mind their business.

I had to admit Travis was cute, with his whole bad boy rocker look and that lower lip ring he sported. All of Ryder's friends were cute but there was something about Ryder that struck me since the first time I laid eyes on him.

"Guys I'd like you to meet Nova, and those are her friends." Ryder introduces us to his friends who are now eyeing us attentively.
"Ahh so you're the girl Ryder won't stop yammering about." Travis says cheekily. I heard a bang under the table and Travis groaned in pain.

He talks about me. I couldn't possibly imagine why.

"Yeah especially since you had us dig up literally everything on the girl." Dexter added. He turns to me grinning. "Great dental records by the way."
" Thanks. I floss."

All the while Wyatt and Chase have been staring intensely at Lola, then at each other then back at Lola. I guess Chase couldn't take it anymore when he asked, "Don't I know you from somewhere?"
Lola rolled her eyes annoyed. "Chase I've been in all your physics, chemistry and geography classes."

It was obvious they didn't recognize her because of her dramatic transformation.

Wyatt dropped the fork he was stabbing his food with. "Delores is that you?" He squinted "Dorky Delores Lombardi?"
"Yeah that's me." Lola deadpans.
"You look different." Chase manages to get out.
"Fuck different, you look hot Delores." Wyatt says still stunned
"I know and its Lola now." She corrects him.

Ellie, Andy and Piper exchanged glances as if to say 'Look at those tools. They only notice her cus' she's hot now.'

I see Travis lean over to whisper to her. "If it's any consolation, I knew it was you all along Lola."

"So what's this assignment you two have?" Travis asks
"Present a song that shows out emotional connection." Ryder explains, putting air quotes over 'emotional connection.'
"The problem is, we have no idea what to do or what song to choose because we have no emotional connection." I comment.
Ryder's eyes immediately shoot up from his plate to lock gazes with me.

You know when you accidentally make eye contact with someone and you both quickly look away? This was on purpose and Ryder doesn't look away.

"Oh, I have an idea. Lola says almost  jumping from her seat.
"Nova you can sing and you can both act out the lyrics or the music video." 
My pulse races at the thought. "Sing? Lola are you crazy? You know I don't do public singing."
Chase pops another fry into his mouth "Why not?"
"Second grade, I played a singing shrub in the school play; I froze up so bad they had to carry me off stage. Third grade, I played a snowflake; the only line I had to sing was 'Here comes the snow queen' and I fainted. Me and public singing don't go well together." 

By this time Ryder was doubled over in laughter. "You think that's funny Powers?"
"Immensely." He says pretending to wipe a tear from his cheek.  

"We could help you with your stage fright Nova." Dexter offered. "We are in a band you know." 

I sat wide eyed looking at Ryder. "You're in a band?" 
"Uh I'm more of the manager."
"I don't know guys maybe, I'll pass on the singing and Ryder and I will  just play an instrumental."
