There's only two ways to become a vampire. 1) be born off two vampire parents or 2) get bitten by one and survive the bite.
But that was extremely rare. No human has survived a vampire bite in the past 1500 years.
Vampires can live forever. They can also die but it's not simple nor easy killing one.
They don't feel physical pain and don't age. Their bodies freeze after they turn 25. Which is when a human is considered at their prime.
It might seem like a desirable thing, being a vampire. But it isn't. There's one thing vampires struggle with: finding a meaning to their long lives, a reason to live, something that'll keep them from going crazy out of boredom.
They say vampires can only fall in love with other vampires because the pain of seeing the one you treasure most in this world age without you and grow weak or old until they die is the most painful experience a vampire could endure. Most vampires end up ripping their own hearts out of their chests to stop the pain. To which after, they die.
Unlike all the vampire stories out there, vampires aren't beautiful or overwhelmingly gorgeous. They come in all forms and sizes. They just are disease-proof so no deformities. They're average, some can be the most beautifully pleasing vampires you'll ever see but others can just blend into a crowd.
You are a 19 year old vampire. Currently studying at an average university in Chicago. Your parents are both hospital doctors. Nowadays that's the easiest way to get access to blood bags. Most vampires have to work in a blood related field. Unless you want to be "vegan". Drink only animal blood. It doesn't taste the same. You can't replace chicken with tofu. But it does the job. Stops the cravings.
You can survive on either. The human world always portrays vampires as these vicious monsters that can't control their hunger, that attack and leave victims half dead. That's not true at all. You're all pretty tame. You all haven't had a huge vampire incident in centuries. Even though sometimes there's vampirism cases of famous criminals that killed for blood. Thankfully they never gave away the fact that an entire vampire population proliferates out there.
You lived a pretty normal life, avoided love because you knew how dangerous it was. Especially if they turned out to be different from what you were.
In a world like this, it was pretty much impossible to distinguish vampires from humans. You would have to ask them directly or catch them doing something only vampires could do. Or you'd have to be like you. Grow up in a vampire community where everyone knows each other for what they were.
Your life was about to get very exciting and you didn't even know it.
