The rain bit into her skin like needles and she screamed and cried until the taste of blood was all she knew. But still, she clawed at the dirt with her bare fingernails like that which was buried underneath was all she had left- because it was.
She could fix this. The power burning inside of her spurred her on. It held all the promises. It whispered that it could bring him back. It promised to help her. She didn't pause to think of what that would mean. There would be consequences for using such magic, but she didn't care as long as she could bring him back.
As she dug into the dirt, her magic leaked out. Helping her even with this. She vaguely noticed how the dirt seemed to move on its own accord. Faster than humanly possible, her nails scratched against his casket.
She uncovered the casket the best she could before pulling it open. Her heart broke all over again as she stared down at his lifeless body.
"Don't worry, Jack. I'm going to make this right." She reached forward, caressing his cheek.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, she dropped her hand and focused on what she had to do. Raising the dead was dangerous magic. If not done properly, the soul might not successfully return to the body, leaving a soulless, reanimated body. And that was dangerous.
She closed her eyes, recalling all the events that led to this day. Tears streamed down her cheeks and as they flowed, she called forth all of her magic. Wind whipped her hair around, thunder rumbled overhead, and the earth trembled underneath her. Her skin illuminated in the darkness as the magic flowed through her. When the air around her cracked with power her eyes snapped open and she raised her hands to the sky and called out.
"Into the darkness, I call! Bring forth the soul that belongs to this body. The soul that had been taken all too soon. Return to the living! It is not yet your time!" Her voice rose until she shouted the last part. "Jack Whittaker, I summon you!"
The wind howled and from the darkness of the grave, she could see the storm raging above.
Just as she opened her mouth to call out again, she felt it. The air seemed to be alive with electricity. She felt as if she had touched a live wire. A wispy figure flickered in front of her. When his face became clearer, she choked out a sob.
"Jack."
Sad eyes met hers.
"Vaia." His voice was haunting and far away. He faded in and out. She knew she didn't have much time.
"I'm going to bring you back. I'm going to fix this, Jack," she told him.
"You can't fix this, Vaia. It was my time to go."
She didn't believe that.
"No! It was an accident! It can't be your time. Not yet. I'm not ready." Her sobs came harder now and she tried to pull herself together. She needed to focus. "I can't do this without you. Please, Jack. Let me fix this!"
Jack closed his eyes and his ghostly form stopped flickering until he stood in front of her almost as solid as she was, but when she reached out to touch him, her hand passed right through him.
He knelt in front of her.
"No one is ever ready to face death, Vaia. You are much stronger than you know. You can do this without me, you'll see."
"But I can bring you back!" She insisted, but the decision was in his eyes.
"The price for using that kind of magic is far too great. I would never agree to it. You know that." He reasoned.
She did know that. As she looked at him, her lip trembled.
"I miss you so much already."
"I know, baby. But I'm al-"
She cut him off with a look.
"If you're about to say you'll always be with me, I'll resurrect you just so I can punch you in the face."
He gave a ghostly laugh.
"I'll be watching over you, Vaia and when it's your time I'll be waiting."
A new round of sobs choked her.
"Jack..."
"You're going to live such a beautiful life, baby. We'll have so much to talk about." He turned to look behind him and when he turned back to her, the sadness in his eyes returned. "I have to go no, Vaia. Promise me you'll live your life to the fullest."
"Jack," she cried, shaking her head.
"Promise me," he insisted, his from flickering now.
"I promise!" She sobbed.
He smiled just as he disappeared back into the darkness.
