The summer romance was the most beautiful memory they had of each other. Every moment since the movie theatre was intimate, magical. Every detail something they held on to during times of war. The Donovan estate had a spectacular garden and behind its prim and proper design laid the field of wild flowers. During the warm hours of summer, violets, Queen Anne’s lace and cornflowers bloomed in the patch. While Curtis took his ‘girls’ to the gazebo, Cedric and Camellia spent sweet seconds in the meadow.
On the third week of their relationship, Camellia had escaped an argument between her brothers and her father. Loud and tense as it was, she had slipped out of the lunch table, passing a note to her owl before she retreated through the rows of high hedges and into the meadow. Casually dressed in a dark emerald and pastel pink sundress (one of her personal favorites), Camellia freely moved through the climbing and the leaping involved through the hedges, until at last, she was on the other side. Sunlight beamed onto the patches of grass, the trees whispering among each other as the wind picked up. The brunette lowered her weight beside the forget-me-nots, feeling the grass against her bare skin and the sun warming her face. Countryside differed greatly from the great city of London; number one factor was the weather. Whenever it rained, Dorset gleamed with the warmth of the sun. Rain came and drowned the streets but it only made the days more precious.
“You should wear a sundress more often, my love.” Cedric purred from above her, one arm wrapped around his chest while the other one’s knuckles were caught between his teeth.
“Wouldn’t you like that?” Camellia shot back, rolling her eyes playfully as she pushed up to sit, twisting in her position to face him.
Cedric grinned cheekily, taking his spot behind her. Curtis’ and one of the brothers’ booming voices ripped through the silence, beyond the hedges and trees, catching their attention. As soon as Camellia’s owl had arrived, Cedric had to pray to all the gods above when he took hold of his portkey. Wrapping his arms around the brunette’s waist, he pulled her closer, both indulging in the momentary silence and warmth of each other.
Camellia found solace in that memory. The fragrance of the floras, the heat of the sun and the cold breeze from the river nearby kept her sanity as bay. Cedric’s grip had tightened when her name was uttered by her father, a talk of marriage and future resumed and Camellia had to distract the newcomer so he didn’t have to hear anything. A bittersweet moment but Cedric’s presence managed to make her feel safe. It made her feel in control of her path for once. No fears of the future and marriage, just her and the love of her life.
When Elias Donster’s eyes burnt into dangerous embers of gold, Cedric pulled her to his chest protectively, wand out as Curtis had been. Her fingers gripped his sweater tightly, refusing to look at the man whom she had trusted for months. The vile memory of his ravenous gaze kept overpowering the moment she pushed up to ease her dread and her racing heart. Her breathing was shallow and her body failed to cooperate even as she tried to compose herself.
“You’re alright. You’re safe.” Cedric lulled, his lips brushing her ear as he spoke.
“Stay away from her, pretty boy.” Elias snarled, his hands braced on the back of his neck, his muscles tense and on the verge of snapping.
