Brokenstar reopened his eyes, seeing tall dark trees around him, without a hint of a single star.
I can see again. But where am I? This isn't StarClan.
Then he saw a scarred, mangy, yellow tom with ragged fur and a single yellow eye gleaming in the darkness of the silent, mysterious forest. "Welcome," he mewed.
"What do you want?" Brokenstar asked with a bitter, threatening voice. The yellow tom fixed Brokenstar with a menacing gaze. "I am One Eye," the tom mewed with an icy-cold tone in his voice.
Brokenstar grinned, showing a hint of his sharp, yellow teeth. "One Eye? What kind of a dumb name is that?" he taunted, unsheathing his claws. "Whatever this place might be, it seems as if I have just found my first victim. Prepare to die!" Just as he finished speaking, he lunged at One Eye but the mysterious cat was too fast for him, dodging Brokenstar's thorn-sharp claws.
"You're too slow. If you want to live then just give up."
Brokenstar was puzzled. "Live? Aren't I already dead?"
One Eye's gaze was still fixed on Brokenstar. "Your body is dead but the darkness that lies in your very soul is what brought you here."
"What is this place?" Brokenstar asked, echoing his thoughts out loud. The mangy tom came up to him. "This place is also known as the Dark Forest."
Brokenstar let out a mrrow of laughter. "The Dark Forest? I think I've noticed that already."
One Eye grinned, his single yellow eye shining in the darkness. "Cats with pure evil in their heart, such as yourself, are welcome here."
"So is it just you and me, then?" Brokenstar asked, curiously.
"No, but every cat here walks alone."
Brokenstar twitched his whiskers. "Very well."
One Eye started to walk away but stopped and turned once more to the dark brown tabby tom.
"Don't get lost in the darkness. You never know when it will swallow you," then he left, his figurine vanishing into the shadows.
Brokenstar sheathed his claws then started to explore the dark and mysterious forest. The sky was dark and gloomy as if the forest was taken over by the eternal night.
It's hard to breathe. Brokenstar thought, his ears pricked for any sound of prey. But the forest was still silent.
I can't scent anything, either. What kind of a forest is this?
As he walked through the forest, Yellowfang's words rang in his mind.
"I am your mother, Brokentail."
Brokenstar tried to get these words out of his head but whatever he did, he couldn't stop thinking about it. Even if it explains why she was so nice to me and why she always wanted to be attached to me... I don't want to believe it, even if it's the truth. Growing up without a mother is better than being a medicine cat's kit!
Then he saw a light nearby. Could that be StarClan?
He ran towards the light, slowing his pace as he reached the border. StarClan has a border? he wondered. Perhaps many things have happened since StarClan was created.
Then he saw a tiny, gray kit with blue eyes on the other side. He recognized her, not knowing why. That must be the kit that gave me a life back when I became leader. he recalled. She's probably here for a good reason. I must talk to her.
"Who are you?" Brokenstar asked, trying to touch her but they were separated by the very border that separated the Dark Forest and StarClan.
"I'm Wishkit," the she-cat mewed with a tiny voice. "I'm your sister, Brokenstar. Hopekit and Raggedstar are in StarClan and I'm with them. I wish you were here with us."
Sister? How many secrets are yet to be told? Brokenstar thought, appearing shocked as ever.
"What happened to you?" Brokenstar mewed at last.
"My sister died shortly after birth and I was stillborn." Wishkit murmured, her soft gaze fixed on Brokenstar. "You were the only survivor."
Brokenstar sat down, his eyes fixed on his tiny sister. "It's Yellowfang's fault," he hissed. "if it weren't for her, you two would have a chance to live and I would still be hunting, fighting and living how I was supposed to."
Wishkit looked at him with a sorrowful gaze. "It's your fault, Brokenstar, not Yellowfang's. It was your choice to go down the path of bloodshed. You did this to yourself; you let your circumstances change you. You could have been someone great, and you would be here with us in StarClan..."
Brokenstar listened to her apprehensively, still refusing to believe a word she had said. "You're wrong!" he snarled.
The small gray she-kit ignored her brother's protest. "If you could do it all over again, what would you do?"
"If I could do it all over again, I would murder Yellowfang."
Wishkit let out a sigh. "I hope you'll see the consequences your actions have caused," she mewed at last and walked off.
Brokenstar turned away and glanced over his shoulder, seeing his sister's tiny body one last time, and then he walked away. He found a den-like hollow and he lay down. The ground was far softer than it normally was. He tried to relax, his conversation with his sister fresh in his mind. Her last question still ringing in his ears.
If I could do it all over again, what would I do? Brokenstar wondered. He let out a sigh. It doesn't matter, it's the past. I don't regret a single thing I've done. He rested his head on the soft ground, his orange eyes gleaming in the darkness of the den-like hollow. There's nothing left for me to do here. I'll just get lost in the memories of the life I once had. Perhaps recalling the past can answer many unanswered questions I've left behind...
