The night before the big contest, Lydia could hardly sleep

The night before the big contest, Lydia could hardly sleep. She tossed and turned restlessly from dusk until dawn, waking up to every scuff and sound from outside. As soon as she'd close her eyes again, a war would wage for her attention between Jamie, pizza boy, and Battle of the Bands.

At the sound of her father's eight AM alarm, unable to lie awake any longer, she decided to join him in kicking off the covers and rolling out of bed.

While Cameron tiredly dragged his feet down the hallway to the bathroom to begin his morning ritual, Lydia pulled her cherry red Stratocaster into her lap, beginning to get her practice in. She went through some basic warm-ups, just to get her hands into the groove. She then proceeded to pluck through the small handful of songs Girl Talk would be performing later that evening.

With 20 bands on the docket, each band was only allotted twelve minutes to impress the crowd on the first night. Twelve minutes didn't leave much time, but it was all a part of the challenge.

Luckily for Girl Talk, many of their songs were punchy, powerful, and short in length. They felt confident about playing three songs and still maintaining enough time allotment for dramatic improvisations.

Despite her tired eyes, Lydia's calloused fingertips glided across the frets with ease. She practiced the songs over and over again, committing them to muscle memory, stopping only when the invigorating aroma of freshly brewed coffee hit her nose. Pushing her guitar onto the bed, Lydia hopped out of bed, grabbing a pair of flannel pajama pants before heading out into the kitchen.

Her father was leaning against the counter, staring out the window while he hugged a mug of black coffee close to his jowl. As Lydia came shuffling into the kitchen, he looked over, his dark eyes widening with surprise.

"What are you doing up this early, rock-star?" He joked. "Don't you have some big gig tonight?"

Lydia sighed, grabbing a mug from the cupboard. She dragged her feet all the way over to the coffee maker, filling up her mug with the steaming hot, bitter liquid.
