Brunnhilde had seen many things in her life. She had seen the falls of leaders and civilisations, and was the only survivor of the Valkyrie's battle against Hela (at least, the only one she knew of). There was a great deal of blood on her hands and her blade; the same could be said for her foes, but that didn't make the nightmares any better.
Thankfully, over the past years, New Asgard had been a kind home to the Asgardians and their new King. Thor and his friends (Brunnhilde only knew them as the man, the woman, the bigger man, the rabbit and the tree) came to visit every now and again, to the delight of the Asgardian children, who marveled at the tree and rabbit especially. Eventually, Thor found self-worth in this newfound family, and became better again.
Much like Brunnhilde had, too. Jane, now the Mighty Thor (or just Thor for short) would often rest in New Asgard after battle. She also knew Odinson (the former Thor), and the two were able to bond over their experiences with him. Or, more accurately, they were able to bond over jokes they made at his expense. The King and Thor became close friends, and eventually considered each other sisters.
And then the King found her Queen.
Carol Danvers was a curious woman. She, in her own words, took no shit and gave none either. But what intrigued Brunnhilde more was her softer side. The woman from the stars was seen as this confident, brash, powerful tank, but Brunnhilde came to know that the woman from the stars was still only a woman. An incredibly compassionate, caring woman, in fact. So much so that the King of Asgard found herself falling in love.
Brunnhilde still remembers what Carol was wearing the day she told her. Hand-knitted grey sweater, just the right size that they could share it. A hat of similar nature, thick, black joggers and fluffy slippers made to look like bunnies.
They were cuddled up next to the fire in Brunnhilde's house. She had been wanting to say those words all day (actually longer, but she'd never admit it), but she was scared. Rather cowardly for a King, some might say.
As Carol gazed at the dancing flames, and Brunnhilde gazed at her, the words quietly slipped from her mouth:
"I love you."
Carol simply smiled, and replied:
"I know."
Carol hadn't loved anyone since Maria and Monica. She reckoned she never would. But she hadn't reckoned on meeting Brunnhilde, either.
So when she spoke again, Carol said:
"Me too."
