"Contemplation seems to be about the only luxury."
— Dixie Smith

THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS PASSED BY THEM WITH A BLUR. The bright lights and eccentric colors all blurred together as the sleek, black car whizzed past all of the buildings. Crowds of people lined the streets, buzzing around with happy faces and fancy outfits. The city was alive and Clover watched in awe of how fun the night looked.

If it wasn't for her current situation, she would be amongst the public. She knew she would probably be all dolled up and partying with strangers until the sun came up the next morning.

Instead, the young party girl found herself sitting inside a luxurious car beside a man who was deemed a monster in the streets.

Clover had seen how ruthless he could be. He wore a mask around his enemies that shook them heavy with fear. Weston Knight was the epitome of a man whom hid behind his past. She itched to figure out what made him this way. She wanted to understand the inner-workings of his mind and get a glimpse of who he was.

It was too bad he would never allow her to get close enough.

Staring out of the window, she could see in the corner of her eye his tense body. The man's long legs stretched out before him, his knees digging into the seat due to their length. He too, was looking out at his surroundings. Weston had a permanent frown on his face and a crease in between his brows.

Deep down, there was a feeling inside her that wanted to smooth away the worry between his eyes.

Clover glanced down at her lap, suddenly feeling awkward in the car. She noticed how he kept his body facing away from her, not allowing their skin to touch.

          "Can I ask you something?"

Weston slowly removed his focus from the window to her. His brown eyes bored into hers, waiting for her to ask the question.

She felt small underneath his heated gaze. Clover always thought herself to be a confident person, but there was something intimating about his stare that made her insecure. "Why did you kiss me back?"

He was taken aback by the boldness of her question. Weston blinked. The man was speechless, having no notion on how to respond. He opened and closed his mouth several times, unsure on what to say. He finally settled on a simple "I don't know."

Clover's face got hot upon hearing him answer. She nodded, not wanting to say anything back in fear that her voice would crack.
