**they are NOT dating yet**

James

I woke up in a cold sweat. Trying to steady my breathing, I looked at the clock beside my bed that read 2:15 AM. Considering the nightmare I just had I did not want to go back to sleep because I didn't want to risk having it again. Running my heads through my hair, I got up and headed down to the heads' common room. Thank Merlin Lily's still in bed, I thought to myself as I sat on the sofa in front of the flickering fire.

Looking at the fire I tried to get the nightmare out of my head, but every time I tried it just came back. I was stuck. My body wouldn't move and I couldn't do anything except watch what was happening. Lily, Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail, Marlene, and my parents were being held by Death Eaters. Voldemort was there too, he had a very cruel smile on his snakelike face. "James Potter," he hissed out, "Your bravery and loyalty goes a long way, but I'm afraid you can do nothing to fully protect your friends and family."

I couldn't reply, my mouth wouldn't open no matter how much I willed it to. "No words?" Voldemort asked with a sneer, "Fine then, Bellatrix, go ahead."

Bellatrix grinned evilly, "With pleasure, my lord," she replied and dropped Lily on the ground , "Oh we'll take the silencio charm off I think," she said, "Now, mudblood, you will know your place," with that she cast the Cruciatus curse on Lily.

Her scream cut through me like knives, but I was immobile, with every fiber of my being I tried to escape whatever was keeping me from moving, nothing gave. Bellatrix eventually stopped and gave Lily time to breathe. "Now Bella, we have to let others have fun as well," Voldemort said, "Let the others have their turn," Bellatrix withdrew, "Lucius, Regulus, Dolohov, Fenrir, Yaxley, and Severus, go ahead and begin as well."

With his final word the screams of Remus, Sirius, Peter, Marlene, and my parents ripped through the air. "Bellatrix, why don't you join in the fun again?" Voldemort asked.

Cackling, Bellatrix cast the curse at Lily again and her screams added to the mix. I wanted to block my ears, something to mute it, but there was nothing to do. Voldemort told the Death Eaters to stop. He then turned to me, "James Potter, how long do you think you can keep your loved ones from me?"

"James," someone was calling me, "James," someone was shaking my shoulder, "James!" I woke with a start. Somehow I fell asleep on the couch and had the nightmare again. Lily was shaking me awake. "James, what are you doing down here?"

"I could ask you the same," I replied with an edge to my voice.

She hesitated then said, "I woke up to get some water and saw you down here. You looked like you were having a fit or something."

"Yeah, well, I'm fine," I told her angrily. I didn't want her to know about my nightmare.

She came to stand in front of me, I hadn't moved from my sitting position on the couch. "James," she began quietly, "are you alright?"

I looked up at her green eyes and saw the concern and kindness in them. Something caused me to shake my head and lean forward and wrap my arms around her waist. She froze for a second but started rubbing my back in soothing circles, "Hey, hey, James it'll be ok," I stayed silent, "do you want to talk?" again I said nothing, "do you want some water?" I nodded, "Ok, I'll be right back," I let her go and leaned back on the couch.

She came back with two goblets full of water and gave one to me. It was silent for a moment while we just sat in front of the fire with our water. I broke the silence, "It was just a nightmare."

"Mmm, ok," she replied, "What was it about?"

I looked over at her, she was sitting there staring at me expectantly with her hair in an extremely messy ponytail and pajamas. I still don't know what caused me to do it, but I found myself telling her every detail of it. She just sat in silence and let me tell it all. As a final thought I added, "I've had it more than once."

Lily was quiet for a moment then said, "Well, I guess it shows you care a lot and are scared of what could happen to the people you care about."

"I guess," I replied lamely. We lapsed into another silence and I turned to the fire.

"Ya know," she started, "I've had similar nightmares too," I looked at her, shocked.

"What?"

"Uh huh," she stared at the fire, "Mine are slightly different. I see see my parents, Marlene, Dorcas, Mary, and Alice. Also Sirius, Remus, and Peter because I guess I'm really close with them since we became friends last year. You're there too. But instead of the Cruciatus Curse," she stopped talking for a moment, "The Death Eaters use the killing curse and Voldemort says, 'If you were normal and not a freak or a mudblood, they wouldn't have died,'" she hastily started wiping her eyes at that, "That's the real reason I'm up."

The only thing I could think of at that moment to say to her was, "You're not a freak."

She turned to me with watery eyes, "Tell that to my sister and every bigoted pureblood in this school."

"Well you're not," I said matter of factly, "Also your nightmare just shows that you care about people a lot and want to do what's best for them, no matter what."

We lapsed into another silence. "You know we're very similar," Lily said.

"How?" I asked curiously.

"We both care about our people and are fiercely protective over them. We will fight for what we want without thinking about the consequences. And we will do anything in our power to prevent people from getting hurt. I think that makes us similar. Don't you?"

I don't know why, but I had a small smile, "Yeah, I suppose so."

With that final thought, we continued sitting on the couch sipping our water and eventually fell asleep. This time, with no nightmares.
