Of course, I'm going to do this cliche prompt
James
Normally I don't pay attention in Charms class. But today was an exception. Today was the day we were casting our patronuses in class. Considering we've been working on this for a week and this was our last shot to cast one in class, we were very excited. Now, not to brag or anything, but we marauders had already mastered the Patronus Charm. We were bored and wanted to find something to occupy our time, so we took up the challenge of learning it.
Anyway, I was paying particular attention to a certain red-head, Lily Evans. We had become really good friends over the past few years, and now that we're in seventh year we had become even closer. I honestly don't know if that was a good or bad thing because my feelings for her hadn't gone away, if anything they had become stronger. Not that I was going to tell her that anytime soon because she'd probably hex me. I shook my head and brought my attention back to Lily. The best she had done so far was conjure four legs of some creature.
Professor Flitwick then called the class to attention, "Alright class, since this is the last day we will be studying the Patronus Charm, everyone of you is going to try and cast a corporeal patronus. Now I don't expect everyone to be able to cast this. It is a very difficult charm after all. But, if you can I'll give you bonus points and if you can't there's no penalty. Who would like to start?"
Since no one seemed to volunteer, Flitwick eyed me, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. Probably because we weren't attempting to try and cast the charm during class and instead were goofing off. "Mr. Black, why don't you start us off? Flitwick called.
"Of course Professor," he stood up from his seat and swaggered to the front of the room. I rolled my eyes at my best friend.
When he got to the front, he casually flicked his wand and said the incantation. A large shaggy dog burst out of his wand, walked around a few times and then dissolved. The class erupted into applause. Sirius bowed to the class and smirked as he walked back to his seat. "Show off," I thought.
After that the rest of the class started forming a line to cast their patronus. Most only got a couple wisps of smoke. About half of the class had gone when it was Lily's turn. I was eager to watch her do this. Before she cast the charm she glanced over at me and I gave her a thumbs up. Lily then clearly said "Expecto Patronum." And out from her wand burst a beautiful doe. It cantered around for a few moments before dissolving like Sirius's. My mouth dropped open and I about fell out of my seat. Sirius looked at me with amazement, Remus with concern, and Peter looked worried.
Since I almost fell out of my seat, Lily turned to me with confusion on her face. I gave her a small smile, which she returned and she went back to her seat next to Marlene. I really can't cast my patronus in front of the class, that would completely humiliate Lily. I cannot do that to her. I might have in fifth year, but I had matured since then.
However, everyone else seemed to have gone while I was trying to figure out what to do. I was brought back to reality by Flitwick saying, "Mr. Potter, everyone else has gone. It's your turn."
I glanced at Lily and I knew that I couldn't do that to her so I said, "I'm sorry, Professor, but can I do mine later? I promise you will understand why."
He seemed to be considering this, "Alright Potter, but you have to do it immediately after class. With that, class dismissed everyone! Mr. Potter, please come see me."
Lily
I was so excited that I cast a corporeal patronus! It was beautiful, but now I was perplexed. James Potter not wanting to show off in class? Since when does he do that? This was new and my curiosity got the better of me. So as I was walking in the corridor with Marlene and Alice, I said that I left my quill in the classroom and I was going back to get it.
That was not true, I wanted to see James's patronus, and find out why he didn't do it in class. Lucky for me the classroom door was open a bit and I could peak in without being seen. James seemed to be talking to Flitwick and Flitwick seemed to have an understanding smile on his face. He gave a nod and then James cast his patronus. It was a magnificent stag.
Wait, a stag?
No no no no no. This can't be true, we are not soulmates. I mean I'm not entirely opposed to that idea. I think I might be getting a crush on him but that's beside the point. Oh merlin, why did it have to be a stag?
Then I had another realization, he didn't want to embarrass me in front of the class. That's why he wanted to do it another time. "Good gracious James when did you grow up," I think. With that thought I walked away from the door to find my friends. And as I did a small smile grew on my face.
Soulmate huh? Maybe that wouldn't be so bad.
