"Alright, let's circle up and get ready to stretch," Daichi called to the team now that everyone had their court shoes on and looked ready for practice to start.
Loud voices echoed and bounced around the gym as the players counted aloud, their captain leading the chant as the coaches vaguely supervised.
Outside the gym, another student stood listening for a moment. His eyes were blown wide with excitement at the sound of the team - his future teams - loud voices. Not wanting to waste a second more, he pushed open the gym doors and stepped in.
Immediately, Nishinoya and Tanaka looked over expecting to see the team's managers entering per normal. They both did a double take upon seeing the stranger. "Hey, uh Daichi-san,"
"No," the captain replied before either of them could continue, already predicting their daily antics. "You can't go greet Kiyoko-san and Yachi-san. We are stretching as a team today, so quit distracting everyone."
"Hey there!"
Everyone who hadn't already stopped to stare sure was now. Even Daichi stood and turned to look at the owner of that deep and unfamiliar voice. Coach Ukai's attention had been caught as well, and he pushed off the wall he had been leaning against to walk closer.
"Hey kid we're trying to run our practice, you need something?" the blonde haired man asked as he crossed his arms over his chest with a suspicious look.
With a confident smile, the newcomer said, "Yeah actually I do need something. My name's Shirogane Kaito and I'm going to join your team!"
There was a small pause as all the players glanced around at each other in surprise.
"You do realize that our season is damn near over right? Why are you trying to join so late huh?" questioned Ukai as he studied Shirogane. Judging off looks and the confidence which he spoke, Ukai guessed he might be a third year, possibly a defensive player because of his height and muscular build.
Shirogane ran a hand through his blonde hair, exposing the naturally dark brown roots which were beginning to grow back in, as he said, "Hey I would have joined as soon as I started here if I were able to, but I just got cleared to officially play again as of this weekend,"
"An injury? Because I'm not sure we have room for another player, much less an injured one who's just going to slow us down," Ukai said with brutal honesty. However his comment didn't seem to dampen Shirogane's spirit in the slightest.
"I'm not injured anymore, I promise. Haven't been for a while now, my brother and doctor are just overly cautious," he said the last part with a laugh. "I also promise that I won't slow you guys down. I know this is a good team already, so I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could help you guys get even better."
"Damn right we're a good team" Tanaka muttered proudly as he stood next to Nishinoya, most of the team had risen from their stretching positions to stand. This of course earned him a smack on the back of the head from Daichi, a signal to shut up and pay attention.
Ukai eyed Shirogane curiously, trying to figure out if he was just a cocky ass, or a genuinely good player who knew what he was talking about. "Think your that good huh? What position do you play blondie? You seem like a defensive player, and if so, your completely out of luck considering we already have a damn good libero."
"I'm a wing spiker. And yeah, I do think I'm pretty good. I'll prove it to you too! How about you guys let me join in on today's practice, see how I do, then decide if you want me or not?" Shirogane suggested with a playful grin.
The coach paused for a second, considering the offer, before turning to his team. "You guys cool with this?" he asked, and was met with smiles and nods. Some were more enthusiastic than others but all the same it was a unanimous yes. Most of the players were pretty eager to get to practice with someone new.
