Somebody else - The 1975
It's been about a week since bowling night, and since then, Mason and I have only gotten closer. He started walking me to some of my classes, and we've been texting more, which makes my mom and brother keep questioning why I'm smiling at my phone so much.
On Wednesday, Maddie and I were sitting in the library during lunch when I decided to tell her how I feel about Mason. "So me and Mason have been talking a lot." I said.
Maddie looked up from the white binder in front of her, "I've noticed. Do you think it could lead to something more?" She asked.
I shrugged, "I don't know yet...but I think I really like him."
"If he asked you to be his girlfriend right now, would you say yes?"
"Yeah, I mean we're just so alike, we have the same sense of humor." I blushed. I noticed that Maddie was being awfully quiet. "What's wrong?"
She opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out. Instead she just sighed. "Nothing."
At that moment I brushed it off, but when I got home, I couldn't stop thinking about what Maddie wanted to say. I wondered if she was going to say something bad about him, but that doesn't seem like something she would do, that's probably why she brushed it off.
The next day , me and Mason walked into the yearbook room together, the whole group was staring at us. As if it was something unusual to see a boy and a girl together. That confused me even more.
Friday night, the five of us went to a football game. Not to take photos for the yearbook, just for fun. Of course, me and Mason talked the whole time about anything. I told him about my childhood pets, he talked to me about his playground injuries, and so much more.
Josh glared at us a few times, but it didn't phase me, I was used to getting those kinds of looks from him since he hates my guts for some reason.
Today is Monday and I'm in the yearbook room going through all the photos on my camera. Deleting the ones I don't like and figuring out which ones to send to Charlie to be edited. I've been thinking about editing them myself though. Mrs. G isn't in her classroom because she's currently on lunch duty, meaning she has to stand around in the cafeteria supervising the students.
After turning off my camera and putting the rest of my stuff in my backpack, I stand up and shut down my computer. I look up and see Josh standing in the doorway, which kinda freaked me out a bit. I roll my eyes, "Look Josh, if you're here to insult me, I don't want to hear it."
"Calm down, I came to give you some advice."
I raise an eyebrow, "What kind of advice?"
"Maddie and Charlie don't have the balls to tell you this because they're afraid of hurting your feelings, but since I don't care, I'll just have to tell you myself."
"What is it?"
"I- we don't think that you should be getting involved with Mason."
I'm taken aback by his words, and I cross my arms above my chest. "Why not?"
He takes a couple steps into the classroom, "He's just not the nice guy that he paints himself to be."
"Mason is the first person that showed me kindness when I moved here."
Josh shakes his head, "Don't date him."
"Okay, first of all, it's not your place to tell me who I can and can't be involved with."
"It was a suggestion-"
I cut him off. "Nobody asked for your suggestion. That's my brothers job. And second, I don't listen to him anyway."
Josh raises his hands up in defeat, "Don't say I didn't warn you." He turns his back towards me and begins walking out of the room. "Geez, I try to do something nice, and you just-"
"You call that nice?"
"Just know that he's never kept any of his girlfriends happy."
What's that supposed to mean?
During the rest of the school day, to the time I got home, my mind kept running over the conversation that Josh and I had. Who is he to tell me I shouldn't date someone? He hasn't shown me one ounce of friendship, and now he has the nerve to suddenly 'warn' me about someone who's been nice to me since day one?
I refuse to follow Josh's advice, or give it any more thought. He hasn't given me a reason to trust anything he says.
