(Emi's POV)
It was breathtaking. Never in my life would I have imagined canines walking amongst the insect-winged creatures without strife. Judging by the awed look on Kane's face, I wasn't the only one.
It wasn't that hard to find its location, if you really knew the area. The hard part was figuring out exactly where the campsite was. It took sharp eyes and two hours of searching, but we eventually realized it was in the gorge that broke the forest in half. Easy, right? Nope. Apparently they had a few fairy lookouts hovering overhead ready to report intruders. There was a whole army of werewolves and fairies waiting for us, the boundary between the camp and us.
"Who are you?" In front line, two individuals stood out. While everyone else behind them wore simple grey and black attires. These two were dressed similarly, but with blue fringes here and there. A symbol of leadership. It was the woman who spoke.
I offered a smile. "Emilia Starr, at your service, madam."
The woman's eye twitched. "Such formalities."
"Ah, the Starr quadruplets. Where is the other half?" the other one asked. He was a boy, just a teenager. He was evidently more easygoing than the woman. He sported a grin in contrast to her scowling face.
"We're here alone. Brett and Jacklyn will not be joining us."
"That's a shame. Well we'd be delighted to have you, wouldn't we Marion?"
Marion continued to scowl. "We don't even know what they're doing here."
"We wish to join you."
"Infiltrate?"
"Join."
"We can't be so sure." She cast suspicious eyes on Kane. "And even if you are here to join, what is his case?"
"Trust me lady," Kane cut in for the first time. "I've got issues with my father. Pack business and what not. I don't know what my sister's reason for joining is, but that is mine."
Marion nodded and looked back at me. "Yes, what is your reason?"
I pressed my lips into a tight line. "Someone I needed to get away from. I don't need to elaborate any further."
She didn't look convinced. "Tell you wait, Marion," the boy said. "I'll take her. If she does anything it's on me."
Marion glared at him. "Very well. But it will be on you. If she does anything, our werewolves will not hesitate to break the truce in your case."
I realized it then, a little later than I should have. This boy was a fairy. I should've noticed. Charismatic attitude? Pixie ears? Even the green wings hiding slightly behind his back was something a careful observer would've noticed.
"You're a fairy," Kane voiced my thoughts with a tone of surprise.
The fairy boy grinned. "That I am. Why? Never seen one before?" He gave a flutter of his wings.
"Show off," I heard Kane mutter.
"Our parents never let us out much," I said. Of course, this wasn't true. Mom and Dad let us roam around whenever we pleased, with a few safety regards. But if I mentioned that, it would make me look like I was still loyal to my family. They'd send Kane and I back immediately, or worse, kill us.
"Not that you'd find a fairy in your very own forest," Marion retorted.
The fairy shook his head at her. "Not true." He addressed us. "But that's definitely not where your mom and I met."
My blood froze. Mother? "What do you mean, where our mom and you met?" Kane demanded.
"I realize I haven't introduced myself to you. Emilia and Kane Starr, I'm Shane. I'm at least five hundred years old. Welcome to our base."
