Chapter One
Rivera POV:
Mercy skipped ahead of me, her girl scout sash flowing in the strong wind. The heavy smell of salt water gusted into my face and blew my dark brown hair back behind me, a feeling which you learn to love after living near the bay your whole life.
My little sister, Mercy, was selling girl scout cookies again. Since I don't have a real job yet, and my mother and father are both extremely busy with work, they enlisted me to help her.
"Let's go to this house!" Mercy yelled. I looked around, only to find that we'd wondered down a dead-end street, and my little sister was skipping up a sandy path, toward a huge Victorian house. It looked old, but well taken care of. Only one car was in the driveway. I sighed, not too sure about this.
I'd passed this house many times when we went fishing with my father, but had never actually seen anybody there. No one was ever outside and the same car always sat in the same place in the driveway.
"Mercy, wait!" I called. But she was already skipping up the path. I hugged my mom's old army jacket closer around me, the wind had a chill to it, and followed her.
"You ring the bell," She whispered to me, suddenly shy. I rolled my eyes, but held my seven year old sister's hand and pressed the doorbell once.
Nothing happened.
"Maybe they're not home." I said, turning to leave. That's when the old door flew open. And there he stood, Mr. Horayne.
"Hello there," He said, smiling at my sister and I. Mercy hid behind me. He had blue eyes...so familiar and bright. Shock overtook me when I realized that I knew him. He was so familiar, especially his eyes. I surly knew this man. But, I shook it off and spoke.
"Hey, I'm Rivera and this is my little sister Mercy." I introduced us. Mercy grabbed my jeans leg
"Rivera, what a lovely name." he said. His eyes seemed to glaze over a moment, deep in thought, but he quickly returned to normal. "How can I help you, Rivera and Mercy?" he asked a moment later.
"Yeah," I started. "Mercy, wanna tell Mr..." My voice trailed off.
"Horayne. I'm Niall Horayne." He said.
"Mr. Horayne what you're doing here?" I asked my sister. She shook her head and I rolled my eyes again.
"Niall, what's going on?" A taller man, probably about forty-something asked, coming out from behind Niall.
"These girls showed up. Rivera and Mercy." Niall said.
"Oh, hello there. I'm Liam, Liam Horayne." He introduced himself and I stared into his eyes, trying to decide where I'd met him before. They were brown, an ordinary color, but so...deep and familiar. I knew him, I was sure of it.
"My little sister is suddenly shy, but she's selling girl scout cookies and-"
"Oh oh oh oh oh! Cookies? I want cookies! Please Liam, can we please?!" Niall asked. Liam rolled his eyes, but took out his thin leather wallet.
"Sure, Nialler." he said.
That nickname...it struck a chord inside of me. I...I knew this man!
"Rivera, was it?" Liam asked.
"Oh, um, yes." I replied.
"We'll take two boxes of...what were the chocolate ones? With the peanut butter?" Liam asked.
"No! I want the mint thins." Niall said.
"We'll take one box of Thin Mints and one of the peanut butter chocolate, please." Liam asked.
