anna woke up, the light hurting her eyes. "she's awake!" she heard an unfamiliar voice call out, as she struggled to open her eyes.
minutes pass and the room is filled, anna's eyes are barley opened. it's a blur with the light and without her glasses. "w-where is m-my sister?" anna coughed.
"i'm sorry ms. cathcart, your sister didn't make it."
anna laid in bed, hearing things she didn't understand. all she knew was that someone shot her, almost to death, and actually did kill her sister. she had her hair mostly shaven because of surgery and a cast on her arm. she remembered the shooting. she remembered almost everything.
she was casually doing homework when she heard her sister opening the front door. it was late so anna peeked, and saw her sister talking to someone, someone who was wearing a green shirt and a white baseball cap, which made seeing their face so much harder. they were wearing a large jacket so anna couldn't tell if it was a guy or girl. all she heard was her sister yelling at them, then three shots. bang. bang. bang. it was cold silence for a few seconds. anna quietly turned off her room light, then hid under her bed.
she heard footsteps, then, her door opened. black boots, muddy but we're new, it was obvious. she then, felt them grab her feet and pull her out, earning a scream from her. anna looked, they were wearing a white bandana, but their eyes were unforgettable. she didn't remember the color but she remembered their stare. their stare was like a shark, but colder and darker.
"please, please don't hurt me." anna begged, but they shot her, once in the head, once in her arm. she tried to breath as she saw the person walk away. their boots now had blood, her blood. she just saw black after that.
anna has told the police everything she remembered. she didn't know what was gonna happen next. she heard from some nurses that there was a 52% of her fully recovering, with no damage. and a 32% of death before her next birthday. it scared her more. and she didn't even have her sister by her.
"anna, hey." she remembered who that was, it was annie. annie has her mascara running down her face as she ran up to anna's bed.
"a-annie." anna coughed. her throat was so dry, it felt like sandpaper.
"here." annie handed her some water. "i called everyone already. but visitor's hours are ending in a few minutes."
"please stay." annie begged, her voice quiet like a mouse as she drank the water.
"i am. i begged many people and since no one else is here, i am." annie hated the odds of her best friend dying. she lost her other best friend already, her boyfriend turned out to be a psychotic rapist who also died, so if she lost anna, she wouldn't be able to take it.
"i know what you're thinking annie." anna's voice was still raspy but louder. "you're not gonna lose me too." annie held annies arm, "and if you do-"
"anna dont talk like that-"
"if you do lose me annie, don't you dare open up that medicine cabinet, again." anna made annie promise.
"i promise anna. but i'm not gonna lose you." they hugged, then turned on the tv, having a comfortable silence, besides the news.
"the surveillance all over this neighborhood were wiped, during the shooting. the camera were turned on right when the shooter got into their car. the car was stolen three months ago from a walmart parking lot. police now have found the car in a large lake just a few miles from this neighborhood."
anna watched closely, seeing her house was in the background. no way would she ever go back.
she didn't realize she went to sleep until she woke up, her nightmare waking her. her nightmare was just a recap of the shooter shooting her. those boots, she remembered they were from macy's, her dad bought them at macy's before he died. they were different colors but same style and brand. innocent boots now were a fear to her.
"no!" she screamed, shooting up and waking up.
"anna?" annie shot up, immediately running to anna's side as nurses came in, startled. "you're ok, you're ok." annie tried to calm her, "don't you worry my darling, the sun will rise again. the rain will stop, the thunder will go, it will be sunny tomorrow." annie sung, calming anna down. anna's dad used to sing her to sleep, or whenever she'd cry. "youre ok."
