It began in the usual way, Persephone and I were doing our work quietly, the rest of the class at least two metres away from us or more specifically Persephone. Even in a school of supernatural beings she is still isolated. There are some who are close to her even though they have to be a little careful not to touch her bare skin. If they do then, well, they die. But they look past that unlike most people. I'm the only person who can get close because I resist any ability that changes the state of me and my body but people like Bear, who has super strength and can chuck me across a field like I was a potato, I can do nothing about. But death curses are fine though.
I hear giggling from behind me. Instinctively I look up to see if the teacher is still here. This school has the shittiest teachers. The teacher is asleep. Damn it. This teacher keeps falling asleep in class and let me tell you they sleep like a log. I've seen them sleep through Arose bursting in and stealing Persephone and I away to skip class with her. Usually we end up starting a fire, not including the small sparks that fly from Arose's hair.
People hate Persephone for not just her death curse they also hate her for being anything that isn't straight. Seriously, you'd think a school full of people who are shunned from normal society would be more accepting but nope, they're all assholes.
When I look at Persephone I see that she has her head tilted down so her long, brown hair is curtaining around her face, her hands have gone from her worksheet into her lap in fists. My ears tune into what they're saying when I hear my name,
"Teddy just sits next to her to pity her. Her ability keeps her safe so she has nothing to fear."
"Honestly I don't even know whether she knows Persephone likes her or not."
"God, we don't need any more gays then there already is."
I can feel my blood boiling at their laughter. But I stay calm and reach my hand down to Persephone's. The tight fist relaxes, grabbing my hand in a bruising grip. Her head tilts towards me so that one of her eyes peeks through the thick vail of hair. I give her the best smile I can manage, her head tilting towards me even more so I can now see most of her face and her small, grateful smile.
Moments like this it feels as though we are the only people in the room, like it's just us in the middle of some remote forest. I can almost hear the soft breeze through the trees, the happy chirp of the birds, the sunlight warming our sk-
The forest was suddenly swept away as an eraser hits Persephone's head.
"That's it." I get up, turning towards my classmates, "Who the fuck threw that?" I know Persephone's eyes are wide open, I only say the F word when I'm really pissed. My classmates also seem a bit shocked but it was quickly replaced by amusement.
The big dude, I didn't care to remember his name, with some ability to cause explosions, gets up, his face the most condescending look I have ever seen. He's tall, like really tall and let me just say I'm no fairy. This guy is like seven feet tall. Even though he has an extra foot on me, I stand my ground.
"What are you going to do about it? You can't do shit to me. Your ability won't protect you from my explosions and even if it did, I'm confident I could take you on in hand to hand combat."
Before he can react, I grab his arm, flipped him over my shoulder so he crashed through my table. I pull out the knife I always have on me and put it against his neck, "Never underestimate me you little bitch."
Next to me I see Persephone take off a shoe and sock so her bare foot is positioned right next to the guy's head. His shock suddenly turned into fear. A knife to his throat and a death curse right next to his head.
It was now that the teacher decided to wake up. His hazy eyes focus on the scene in front of him. Sighing he uses his fingers to rub his temples, "Put your knife away, Teddy. Persephone put your shoe back on." His tone sounds so done, as if this is common, which I guess here it is pretty common. People tend to fight a lot here. I got off the guy and got a new desk to sit at and continued on with my work. The guy limping back to his table.
-During Lunch-
The people at my table, chairs miss matched, find the story hilarious. Even blue is laughing, though their laugh is drowned out by the loud cackles from Arose, Pyro and Bear.
Arose laughing so hard that sparks are just flying from her hair, her cousin, Pyro, the only one still near her as small fires broke out on the table.
"I can't believe you did that. I mean I know you're protective of Persephone but you don't usually lose your cool like that."
Of course I am. I've known her for most of my life. My mother took her in shortly after she was born, my mother unfazed by the curse. Persephone had killed her mother while her mother was giving birth to her. The doctors saw her as some demon. Even from birth, she was feared and exiled.
"Look, I tried. I stayed calm even as they insulted gay people. They were the ones who resorted to violence first." I say crossing my arms and pointing my nose up.
"It was an eraser." Shoot says. Always the rational person in the group.
"And?"
"You know what? Never mind. I don't Care." And the emo.
Persephone's hand sneaks back into mine, "Thank you." It was so quiet I almost didn't catch it but I did.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My majestic friend Heidi wrote this and it's majestic so I dunno, compliment her, she deserves it. She be known as lightningmeowza
