The weeks rolled along, I was slowly fitting in.
15 June 2019
I was walking about minding my own business when the matron's daughter, who we all called Mickey, waltzed into the room. We spend an hour playing with her. Everything went smoothly until she started hitting my sister.
I took it in a lighthearted spirit. Cmon they're just kids.
My sister pushed her away. Maybe a little too hard. Athena shouted at my sister.
"Liz! Don't push her like that! She's just a kid!" Athena screamed at my sister like I wasn't there.
My sister merely hung her head and backed away. That sparked something in me.
"Excuse me," I said my voice low.
"What?! Don't give me that attitude!" She yelled.
"Well then don't scream at my sister like I'm not standing here," I yelled back.
"What am I supposed to do then. You certainly weren't doing anything." She said, folding her arms across her chest.
"I would've intervened if it blew out of proportion." I stated, "but it didn't, and if you have a problem with my sister, tell me first."
"Are you being serious," she asked mockingly.
"Don't feel like a joke right now. " I retorted.
"If your sister does something, you seriously expect me to come up to you and ask you to solve it. It's doesn't work like that. At the moment I may shout at her."
"That's the problem. You can't. You don't have the right. So kindly come and tell me. I'll take the necessary actions. I'm not someone who stands by to watch as my sister does something wrong contrary to your assumptions. " I raise my voice.
"I'm older than you. I demand respect, I've been here longer too. So you, a newcomer, cannot boss me around. I usually would never ask for respect by you've overstepped a boundary. "
"Whatever," I reply and storm out of the room to go take a shower and blow off steam.
In the public washrooms we have, I vented to Amy about my problems, as we both showered in adjacent cubicles. Biggest mistake ever.
"I don't know why she's so controlling. Who does she think she is?!"
"Mmmmh.," she responded.
Protip: never put someone on blast in a public washroom where that person's accomplices can very well eavesdrop on you.
So basically Ann and Christy, who were twins and in the same grade as Athena overheard my ranting session and reported it to her being the good little bitches they were.
After I showered and went back to my room I was met with hard stares and cold shoulders.
Then we had a long discussion on how new kids had to be put in their place. I got schooled basically, for what. Standing up for my sister.
* applause*After that incident, I and Athena did talk but there was this tension, I was slowly starting to see her bad side. Mostly, it was the twins who I despised. They were back-stabbing she demons and I smelled it a mile away and learnt to keep my distance.
However, life in the hostel was continuing to get harder. I believe it is quite normal and human for a person to check someone out, especially when in a new environment.
