EPILOGUE
*Jerome's POV*
One Year Later
I face Mitch, who is sitting in the passenger seat of my car.
"Are you ready?" I ask.
he sighs deeply.
"Sure. We have to hurry though, Dahlia can't be left on her own for long."
Dr. Lock's daughter, Dahlia, moved in with me and Mitch at our apartment. And since it's not required for anyone who was taken on a Celebration Day to go to school, we care for her like family.
Mitch's right. We can't leave a ten year old alone.
Especially on her birthday.
I get out and look at Mitch.
"You coming babe?" I say with a smirk.
He grumbles and gets out.
As we walk into the building I see Mitch stare at the sign.
ADAYA MENTAL INSTITUTION
I stand next to Mitch, and he holds my hand. I squeeze it and pull him along. We walk in and Mitch talks to the secretary about our visit.
She points to an elevator and says, "Floor B3, room 420."
We walk and take the elevator.
"So, what do you think she'll say." Mitch asks.
"I don't care. I just feel the need for some closure. We had a year to heal, and this is the final bandage."
The elevator dings, and this time I hold Mitch's hand as we walk and look for the door.
"There." He points.
We knock and here a voice say "It's open."
Mitch breathes deeply again.
"She can't hurt anyone now. We'll be okay." I say, and give him a light kiss on his forehead.
He smiles and opens the door.
Dr. Wing, in a straight jacket. A nurse trying to get her to eat some apple sauce.
She turns toward us, her once soft and timid dark eyes now angry.
"It's okay Margret, they just want to ask you some things." The nurse tries to calm her as she puts the applesauce aside.
She stands and walks so she's in front of the door.
"Go ahead." she nudges us.
I walk up to her and sit down so there's a good five feet between us.
"So. We'd like to ask you som-" I start, but Mitch cuts me off.
"Why did you start that program? Why the hybrids? Why Dr. Lock? Why us?"
Dr. Wing smiles.
"Well, I guess it's story time. I started my program in the interest of evolving our race further. Dr. Lock, well he was an easy target. A family to hold against him. Of course I killed his wife immediately, but then I'd torture his children whenever he messed up. And of course, the best people to test on were adolescents when they were still growing. Is that it?"
"No." I say firmly. "Why did you hurt Vikk?"
She gets a faraway look in her eyes.
"He was so... vulnerable. I couldn't resist. Given time, I probably would've made him like me. He could've taken over the agency." She smiles dreamily.
Mitch leans towards me and whispers in my ear. "Let's go. She's kinda freaking me out."
I nod and we start backing up to the door.
"Oh? Leaving so soon? Well, anyway, how's little Dahlia doing?" She smiles again when Mitch stops and glares at her.
"Dahlia is safe now. You'll never see her again." I say sharply, and we leave the room.
"Let's go. Everyone else will have shown up for Dahlia's party already."
I smile.
As I drive out of the parking lot, Mitch takes my hand and kisses me on my furry cheek.
"I love you." He whispers.
And I don't hesitate when I say I love him back.
A/N
So this is it.
I'd like to thank you guys for reading, it means a lot to me.
I kinda don't know what to do now...
I am so proud of you guys. I really don't share any of my writing with people I know in real life because I'm scared they won't like it.
But I can share this with you guys. And when people actually enjoy it, that's better than any amount of votes you could give me.
