We walk in the school gates, Sophie still pulling me along like some sort of pet, and everyone turns around to greet sophie.Of course my buddy had to be the most popular girl in the school, I think grumpily. I barely have time to look at the buildings but from what i can tell, there are two massive structures, with towers and turrets, and a sparkling lake in between- it looks like something from out of a fairy tale. Sophie leads me into a smaller side building, where many people our age see to be converging- maybe our dorms, but if so, what are the other structures for? As we stride through the hallways, I notice some of the guys glancing at me, and I make a mental note not to wear any makeup at all tomorrow. Sophie and I are just about to reach the lockers when an elderly teacher stops us. She has a tight bun and a twinkle of delight in her eyes which makes me instantly cautious. If someone can be that happy when they have a job working with children all day, there's something wrong with them.

"Ah, sophie," she says as we stop. "I see you have already met agatha. Mind if i have a word with her?"

She beckons me into her office, and I follow, grateful for a minute or two without sophie. I look around- the place is painted pastel pink, with inspirational quotes and letters from students stuck up on the walls, and a wooden desk with pumpkin paperweights holding down all of the files. All of this immediately makes me want to throw up. I take a seat in front of the desk, and the teacher looks at me for a moment before starting to talk.

"Agatha- how nice to meet you! I am professor dovey, and I feel that we are going to be great friends." I raise my eyebrows in speculation, but she doesn't seem to notice, or if she does, she doesn't react.

"Now, you have come to the school just in time, because in a week, we are going to be separating students into their respective schools."

I furrow my brow in confusion, and she quickly explains.

"At this school, we like to work with your strengths, to advantage you when choosing a career. in year 8 students are split into two different sections- the good, for students who would be more suited to jobs helping others, and the evil, for students who would succeed more in jobs where they only help themselves. There is quite a rivalry between the two schools, so we give the students a year to get to know each other before splitting them. When students are in year seven, they have classes together and board together in this building, with the same uniform. From years 8-12, however, you board, have lessons and eat with people in your school, in the other two buildings you might have seen outside. The principle also spends year 7 deciding who goes into which school. Now, because you have just come, do you have any idea which school you might veer towards?" dovey asks me.

"I don't know- I'm not particularly good or evil- I'm just normal," I stammered, unsure of what to say. But apparently this isn't the right answer.

"Nonsense! Everyone has a school, you just don't know yours yet. Well then, I guess the school master will just have to work extra hard on your case. Thank you for meeting with me Agatha, it's been a pleasure." Dovey waves me goodbye and I leave the room, still unsure. Good and evil? That's so old fashioned! Like some sort of storybook! But, I don't get time to ponder this much longer, because as soon as I get into the hallway, Sophie pounces on me.

"Well? What did she say?" Sophie asks me, a hint of disapproval in her eyes, although I don't know why.

"Nothing- she was just explaining the way the school works to me." I mutter quickly.

"Oh- so you know about the two schools now? Which one do you want to get? I'm of course going into good." Sophie gushes, the disapproval gone. I make a sudden connection- all of the niceness, the good deeds, just for show so the school master sees it. I realise that Sophie's still waiting and quickly answer.

"Uh- I don't know, what do you think I'll get?" i quickly say

"Well, of course you want to get good, they have the better uniforms, dormitories, dietary choices, classes and just about everything else, but i guess you just have to wait and see." Sophie is about to say more, but sees someone behind me and runs over to them. I turn around and see her hugging a tall guy with tousled golden blond hair, tanned skin and massive muscles- i assume this is tedros. I sniff in distaste, and look up at his face, before quickly looking away when I see his eyes meet mine. After Sophie disentangles herself from Tedros, she drags me over to meet him, and links her hand in his.

"Agatha, this is Tedros, my boyfriend! Teddy, this is agatha, a new girl in our grade." she smiles. Tedros holds out his hand and I quickly shake it, before quickly letting go.

"I'm tedros, nice to meet you." his voice is softer than i expected, warmer too- of course, not that that changes my opinion on him.

"Nice to meet you." I say.

"So, what school did you used to go to?" he asks me.

"Oh, just a local public school-you probably wouldn't know of it. I transferred here because my mum wanted me to go here, but she didn't have enough money last year." I bite my lip. Was the last part too personal? Will they hold it against me that my mum and I have virtually no money? Sophie's eyebrows raise slightly in response, but Tedros doesn't seem to react. My view of him is slightly improved by this.

Tedros opens his mouth as if about to say something to me, but then he looks down at his watch and turns in the other direction.

"Sorry, gotta run- I promised chaddick that I'd meet him at his locker. I'll see you around, agatha!" he calls over his shoulder, already halfway down the hallway.

Sophie turns back to look at me, satisfaction at her boyfriend plain in her eyes.

"Isn't he such a hottie?" she giggles. "And I've heard that he's actually royalty in another country! So if I marry him, I might be queen! So cool!" she sighs, lost in a fantasy. "Imagine all the money you'd have to spend on clothes as a queen..."

I clear my throat to get Sophie's attention, and she snaps back to reality. Back to being efficient, she looks up at the massive staircase down the hall and seems to remember something.

"I almost forgot- I need to show you your dorm room! We still have almost an hour until we need to be at the welcoming assembly, and even if we are late, I'm sure the teachers won't mind. After all, you're new." she says, pulling me down the hall without stopping to ask my opinion on being late. What about making a good impression? But apparently that doesn't matter as much to Sophie, because she continues to pull me through the corridor (immaculate, painted black, white and gold), and up the staircase until we reach the dorm level. Walking down the hallway, I see signs on all of the doors, indicating who will sleep where, but I can't see my name anywhere.

"Now of course," Sophie says, walking at a brisk pace, "these are only our dorms for a week, before we are sorted into our schools and the year sevens arrive, but still, it's good to get a nice partner." she looks at a door sign, and exclaims "Ah! There you are- and look, we're together in a dorm! I guess that must be why I was asked to look after you." she throws open the door, and I hurry in after her. I stand in the doorway in shock- it's all so immaculate, with beautiful paint, wide windows showing views of the school grounds, and large double beds that I'm sure are perfect for snuggling up into after a long day. I slowly walk towards the bed that has my possessions in front of it, still in a trance. It's only when I see Sophie rapidly unpacking her possessions that I remember we have less than an hour to be down at assembly, and I still need to put everything away. I quickly unpack my bags before we finally (finally!) go down to the welcoming assembly.
