NOT PROOFREAD
To say life took the biggest turn would probably be an understatement.
"I said no," I scoffed to Dinah as we were sat on the couch with full bowls of oven baked Mac and cheese while she was putting on her favorite movie tape. This would probably be the twenty seventh time I've seen Bring It On, but it was maybe after the ninth time where I didn't really mind rewatching it.
"What," she gasped while the tape player took it in and started to read it, "Y/N!" She yelled at me while quickly fumbling to get herself up only to throw the nearest pillow right at me.
My foot came up quickly as I clutched on to my bowl of Mac and cheese with my life, "Bitch if you'd made me drop my food I swear-"
"THEY OFFERED TO TAKE YOU SHOPPING AND YOU SAID NO?!"
I sighed as our clunky tv started to play the trailers to movies coming out soon on VHS , "It's just clothes, Dinah. It isn't that big of a deal."
Defeated she took her seat at my side, but never broke her gaze from me, "Y/N you've been wearing the same clothes since sophomore year." Dinah said as she pointed to the hole in my maroon sweater, "Your shit is falling apart."
I shook my head while looking at my sweater, "I can stitch that up." I shrugged as I recalled how I'd done that for most of my life now.
"Most of your clothes are literally hand me downs from your brother and dad. You literally don't have anything that really fits you!" She said while grabbing at the worn out collar of my sweater and pulling back to motion to how baggy it fit me.
"It's comfortable."
"You won't be spending your money." Dinah said in a small voice as I broke eye contact and looked over to the TV, "They offered- Y/N this is something you deserve." She reached over and patted my thigh that was covered by my basketball shorts, "Even so I hope you know that while you may not be spending your money...you don't have to be so careful with how you spend your money now, you know that right?"
Dinah knew that I never met to be stingy with getting new things.
It wasn't because I was cheap, but because in my head I'd had this idea imbedded that I don't need new things when I still have what I got. Back home I grew up learning that you have to work with what you've got. It's how I made it through most of my days. Even with the job I'd gotten working at a near by convince store, I never made enough money to actually see anything for myself.
No.
That wasn't exactly true.
"Yeah," I whispered before taking a fork full of the cheesy noodles. I just wanted some excuse to not want to talk further about these things.
"Okay," she whispered before sitting herself back as the movie was coming to its start. Dinah shifted in her seat for a bit as we both silently watched and ate. That was until she mumbled, "And I mean shit you could get things for me."
I almost choked on my food from hearing that. Dinah ran to the kitchen to get me some lemonade to help me clear my throat. I took a big sip and turned to her while shaking my head, "Really?" I wheezed out before falling back into a good laugh.
Dinah whined and told me about how I could say I liked something to the married couple, but really it could just be something I think Dinah would like. Before I could ask if that was her real intentions on talking me into it, Normani slid our front door open to walk in full glam. Probably just getting back from work, "Woah." I gasped while Dinah whistled at our building mate.
