The fire rumbles softly, as its light wicks around giving off a subtle amber glow in the hell hole that I call my home.
My eyes sting from how salty theyve become as I stare down at my mother. Her skin ever so pale, her eyes sagging from exhaustion and her breath, so very weak. With a shaky gasp, I grasped her sweaty hands within mine.
"Mom, Please just hang on. Just a bit longer." My voice squeaked in the quiet room.
Our doctor turns away and begins to pack his things.
"Please, sir," I let go of my mother's hands and grasp the doctor's coat. "There must be something more. Something that'll just give them more time."
The doctor gently kneels over and gives me a tight hug.
"I'm sorry son. But theres nothing I can do for them anymore." His voice is quiet.
"Please! There has to Dr. Orion! Please save my parents!"
"Listen boy," He grabs me roughly by the chin, forcing me to look up into his tired grey eyes; his face littered with wrinkles and his grey hair matted against his sweaty forehead.
"There isn't anything in this world yet that can save your mother and father. And there's no one here that would help you because of what you are. You've known that for a while now. I'm sorry. "
His words stung deep into my chest, and I stared down at the floor.
My parents both lying in the room with me; struggling to breathe, and continue living. While my younger sister has already passed. If I were to be honest, I think her passing might have influenced my parents to leave. I know its not their fault and that it doesnt make sense. But, the feeling of losing a child must have at least been significant enough to fasten the progression of their sickness.
However, for some reason, I dont believe that to be the case. For its the Sihí that runs through our blood. Its the sihí thats killing them Killing us.
I look at Dr. Orion with newfound hope.
"Sir, it's the sihí thats killing them! It has't to be! My voice cries out to the old man, who's beginning to leave." He gives me another sad look, before turning away.
"You're right boy. But just because we know what's causing it doesnt mean we know how to stop it." He visibly grits his teeth. "You can't always save everyone." His tone of voice, it's a voice that knows, a voice thats been through many ordeals.
I rush back to my parents, grabbing each ones hand ever so tightly. I bring them close to my face, their hands so cold that my body flinches away.
"Please! What am I to do if youre not here? I need you How am I to survive in this horrible world!?" I scream. "Please! Dont leave me alone!"
A hand reaches towards my cheek, slowly wiping away my tears.
"My son," My mothers voice, so barely audible reaches my pointed ears. Her voice so soft, and calm; too calm for someone thats dying.
"Mother! You're awake! Please. I need you; I can't go on without yo-," She gently places a finger on my gray lips.
"Colvak. My sweet little dark elf," She interrupts herself with weak groans. "This world is nothing but cruel. But you my sweet, you are pure. Everyone may see you as dirt, but..." She blinks slowly, and her voice gets so terribly quiet.
"But you, Are my light."
"No! Please! I need you! Please stay with me! I cry."
"I will always be with you. Right She points to my chest. Here..." She breathes. And softly, her hand falls.
