"I hate you, Harry."

Fearing whiplash from his double-take, Harry spun to stare at Hermione. She kept her eyes fixed on her thick book, but his ears hadn't mistaken him despite the abruptness of her words.

"Pardon?"

"I said I hate you, Harry," she said a bit louder as she slammed her book closed. "I told you not to say anything to Anna about Malfoy —"

"Fucking hell, I knew you were —"

"That's what I'm saying! There shouldn't be a fight to begin with! I assumed she was going to the ball with Malfoy because she hangs with him —"

"You saw them talk once."

"— now neither of us has got a date, she won't talk to you or me, and now she's mad at me for assuming."

"Harry," said Hermione. "This isn't about you. Trust me, I get it might feel that way — in your defense, a lot has been about you... But she has every right to be angry. Even if she was —" she visibly repressed a shudder of disgust — "shagging Malfoy..."
