My heart leaps in my throat when something bangs on the front door.

Is it Paul?

The older man cautiously peers out the window blinds on the front window. Then, he opens the front door and sticks his head out, looking both ways.

"I don't see anyone," he shrugs and shuts the door.

I give a small sigh of relief, but I still have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

"So, you have cuts on your head, broken ribs, and you might have a concussion?" the guy asks, putting it all together. I say yes through my clenched teeth, trying to endure the pain.

"We have to call an ambulance. We can't fix broken ribs! And she might need some sort of x-Ray scan for her head," the boy says to the man.

The boy and the man exchange glances.

"Okay." The man shrugs.

"Okay?" The boy is clearly shocked. Why he is shocked, I don't know.

The older man turns to face me.

"Do you have family or friends that can prove you went out with this boy?"

"Uh, yes. My sister knows that I went out and I told my best friend Charlotte that I was going out with Paul tonight," I answer him.

Something flickers across the boy's face at Paul's name that I can't define.

"It's fine. We'll tell the paramedics the truth; she was hurt by her boyfriend and then she came to our house," the man tells the boy who looks a little older than me.

"I'll call you an ambulance," the boy says before heading into the kitchen.

"Wait!" I choke out as a flash of pain flares up.
