Albus Dumbledore was a man of a lot of things which included responsibility but on this day, a mistake of his was discovered.

"Albus, I have heard these are the worst type of muggles there is-"
"And the boys' only relatives."
"Even when they are say supposed to be adopted by Frank and Alice Longbottom if You Know Who attacked the Potters?"
"Yes."
"Albus! They will be abused first, beaten later, and eventually they will develop Obscurus inside them if we leave them here." Minerva was always attached to James Potter in a certain way, Albus thought, this proved it.
But Albus would never forget himself if what Minerva said happened, guess the other plan would be his only choice. Thank goodness he had thought of this.
"Hagrid, take them to Hogwarts. We will discuss these boys' residence later now. Come on."
And so Albus made a mistake to do this which lead him to St. Mungo's
