I couldn’t describe the way I was feeling, up there, in front of the council. They all stared at me like I betrayed them. All I wanted to do was to recoil into the dark to never be seen again.  The guards were holding me too tight; I doubt I could get free, even if I tried. From on top of the platform I could see my family behind the bars, my mother, and sisters stood there with pained expressions on their faces. My father stood next to them, void of emotion while the rest of the family wore distressed expressions of mixed emotion. My family wasn’t the only ones behind the bars with a variety of expressions from hate to sadness, there were hundreds of citizens screaming and yelling malicious words. I couldn’t understand. These people were my friends, neighbors, and family.  How could they all want me dead?

“Silence…silence!” The enforcer yelled. The guards tightened their hold of my arms making me wince as the pain of their grip shot through my arm.

The crowds quieted as the wide silver doors to the right of me began to open. Out slithered the governor Robert Munkin. Robert Munkin was a fast-talking, slick man wearing an expensive suit. It would be too easy to say he was a like a used car salesman. He oozed disingenuous emotion, he sneered and intimidated the people of his region by his very presence. The people in the lower regions could never afford the life style they provided him via their hard-earned tax dollars. He paraded his duplicitous nature with an unflattering mass of grey hair cut short in an uncomplimentary style that cropped at the nape of his neck. He came towards the platform, his steps were slow and menacing he took his time walking up the small stairs.

“Welcome”, Robert said into the microphone.

“Were here today to prosecute this girl, miss Alaska Adams”.  He then turned to me, he was trying to be intimidating, but he just came across as a freaky.

“Do you have anything to say miss Alaska”? His ugly face showed a small smirk, the toned in his voice was similar to one you’d use with a child.  He was celebrating. He finally won…game over… I kept my mouth shut, not one word would come out of my mouth. I wasn’t going to satisfy him and make a scene. The whole council was just like him, evil, conniving, plotting, and unscrupulous bastards, so full of themselves. They had everyone fooled. The five of them deceived the whole population in the Del region.

“The vote will start”, he pauses for a second as he looks up towards the top railing where the other three councilmen stand. They are whispering between themselves. The vice from the region Klein nodded towards Robert to continued. “All in favor of ending miss Alaska’s life”! His voice booms across the chamber. Rows of hands started to be raised. What shocked me the most were my sisters hands were raised. “How could they”? I thought. My sisters and I used to spend our days together chasing kites in the streets, and running around the house, we loved to find adventure. We were inseparable. As we age they grew out of it, well more like they grew out of me. They became to act just like our mother, a supportive housewife. Each day they’d get up early to make breakfast or sew. I couldn’t understand why would they want to do such boring activities. I was different from them, but I always thought we would stay together, that they’d always be there for me. I guess I was wrong.
