The voice startled her, and Dream spun around so fast she knocked over the rabbit that was sat next to the cage. It rolled close to the fire, and the tip of it's ear started to sizzle. The man had come back, and was standing in the doorway, his front paws clenched together. He snarled something that Dream couldn't understand, but the basic message was clear: You're in trouble now.
So much for a warm welcome, Dream couldn't help thinking. The man was just starting to lumber forward when Shadow and Papa came thundering into the den. Without hesitation, Shadow threw himself at the man, somehow leaping high enough to be able to throw his paws around the mans shoulders and hang on, his hind end waving around as the man thrashed.
"You go distract him, I'll undo this latch," Dream growled, nudging Hunter with her nose.
"No," Cougar was about to snap something nasty, but Hunter continued. "I have more experience with these things than you." He looked straight into her eyes, and immediately Dream knew she could trust him. "I'll get her out, I promise you." Nodding, Dream turned back towards the man and flashed him her most vicious snarl. Shadow still clung to his back, and as the man thrashed, Shadow's hind law struck knocked something off of a ledge. Dream didn't have time to process it's shape or size, but it shattered like ice when it hit the ground. A loud bellow of anger brought Dream's attention back to the fight, and she realized that Papa had run up to the man, dodging between his feet and trying to unbalance him. It worked. The man fell to the ground, yelling. She couldn't understand what he was saying, but she guessed it wasn't a compliment. Shadow dodged out of the way just in time to avoid being crushed. But as he fell, the man lashed out at Shadow, hitting him to the ground. That was the last straw.
"No one takes my mother," her voice started as a hoarse whisper, getting louder as she went on. "No one threatens my family, no one disrupts our peace, and NO ONE HURTS MY BROTHER." As she snarled the last word, she lunged at the mans hand, grabbing it in her teeth. She heard a crunch, and felt the satisfying taste of blood. The man screamed in pain just as a loud crack sounded behind Dream. Two golden pelts flashed by her, one yellower than the other, and Hunter's voice sounded "Get out now! Go!" Dream dropped the mans hand, and she helped Papa get Shadow back onto his feet before dashing out the door. She could only hear the mans voice bellowing and the puffing breaths of her Pack as they ran into the darkness of the night.
