Listen to the music: Beyonce - Halo.
I visited Shane every night for a week while Edward and Raw stayed at Shane's house. The police were still investigating but they had lifted fingerprints and found the knife Joe had used on Shane. Both spent most of the time at Raw's Boxing Academy, and only returned at the end of the day.
While the police searched for Joe who seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth, I returned to work and when Shane was discharged from the hospital, I brought him back to my house. There was no way I would allow him to go back to his own bloodstained abode where a near tragedy struck.
I took the day off when I fetched Shane from hospital. His wounds were still painful, but he was a brave man, could withstand a lot. If he was in pain, he didn't show it.
Life in the air force is anything but dreary. In one day I could fly a general to Cape Town, and on my return stopover in Bloemfontein to pick up a government minister. Oversee maintenance on the flossy and ensure it was in tiptop condition for the next flight to Durban or Pietermaritzburg. Near or far, my career never had a boring moment.
Two weeks after Shane was discharged from hospital, Dirk approached me just before take-off.
"Have you decided to come out?" He asked, walking toward the Oryx languishing on the helipad.
"I've been thinking about nothing else these last few days. I'm just so scared that the big cheese will shut me out. You know, make my life miserable. Give me more work, more missions than I could ever hope to cope with."
"I'm ready to come out. I want everyone to know and I don't give a fuck what they think," Dirk said, pulling a face.
"How's it going with your friend?"
"We broke up. He's not in my league. I prefer real men, not some flamboyant ditsyness who thinks everything revolves around him. Parties, discos and raves, and drugs. I couldn't cope. Told him three days ago to f-off"
"Good for you. He wasn't for you. A little too outspoken if you ask me."
"How's Shane?"
"We're good. Shane's recuperating nicely."
"Are you serious about him?"
I didn't hesitate. "As sure as there's day and night."
"Don't you think he's too young for you?"
"He doesn't care about age."
"I can see why you love him."
"Love him? It's more than love."
"I see his car at your house every day now. And you haven't come to a group meeting for the last two weeks."
"I'm looking after him while he recuperates."
"Is he ill?"
"Wounded. Got stabbed in both shoulders and his hand. It's a long story. Shane and Raw are staying at his house."
"They're here? In Johannesburg?"
"Yes. They're thinking of moving back to Johannesburg."
"That's great news. Your life has changed since we found Edward. I'm glad."
"In many ways, it has changed. Thank you. Don't think I ever got to thank you," Gregory said, punching him on the shoulder.
"Yousaid it now. That's good enough for me."
